My Pet Star” is a rhyming picture book that contains a lovely little story about a loving child and her love for a star. Although it certainly wasn’t known at the time of its selection – My Pet Star's themes of illness, kindness, nurture and getting well (or letting go) are incredibly relevant to what we’re all experiencing. The little girl and the star forge a beautiful friendship and this will be a great book for those who love stargazing and those who are keen on having a pet. But for some parents, reading aloud causes a crisis of confidence. It might be fears about stumbling over the words or hearing your voice. We might avoid it all together or race through at such a speed just to get it over and done with. The expert advice is simple – fight your inner critic and do it anyway! As the story progresses we see how kind the young girl is. She treats the star as if it were a pet, doing all the things that one would expect and more. She cleans the star, feeds the star, reads to the star and shows so much love for her pet. A beautiful friendship is formed. We're giving copies of My Pet Star by Corrinne Averiss and Rosalind Beardshaw to families across the country through food banks, refuges and more - and we want you to join in the fun! My Pet Staris a sensitive rhyming text that offers young children lots of play opportunities and rich language. This document offers planning inspiration that teachers can adapt to work for their children in their class. If you have any leftover tissue paper or ribbon lying around the house, you can turn your crafts into shooting stars by gluing thin trails to the bottom of your creations. I dedicated this book ‘To all the carers, big and small.’ And would like to add now - our most heartfelt thanks. Draw your characters on to a piece of cardboard. You could draw a Pet Star, other night-themed characters, or anything you want to take part in your story. My Pet Star is told in rhyme and the words are like a big, warm hug. It is a beautiful book about being kind and when the time comes, letting something go. The girl knows that the star will eventually have to return to the sky, but when it does it doesn’t disappear from her life as it shines down from the sky watching over her.

E:I didn't think it was a great book. It was a good book. I love the illustrations.I didn't like it when they missed their ice creams. As well as the story representing how well you should look after any pet, there are teaching points about the star too including how it enjoys sleeping all day as it’s time to shine is the night sky. Finally, the current Covid-19 situation can’t go without a mention. Every parent and carer is doing the most phenomenal job to keep their children feeling safe, loved and to whatever extent, entertained and stimulated.

Next, tear up your colourful tissue paper into lots of little squares. If you don't have coloured tissue paper, you could paint on to another sheet of baking paper or white tissue paper and use that instead. It’s time to get your cookie cutters ready! Cut out your shapes from the rolled-out dough. Then carefully lift them from the surface using a spatula and place them on the baking tray. In winter 2020/2021 BookTrust Cymru sent out thousands of copies of the wonderful Fy Seren Anwes/My Pet Star by Corrinne Averiss and Rosalind Beardshaw (Welsh adaptation by Anni Llŷn) to libraries and other partners who gifted them to families in Wales. The young girl is such a sweet diverse character and I think many readers will admire her kindness and love for her temporary pet, star. Sadly she does have to say goodbye to the star and this is such a touching moment in the story. The story gently shares that sometimes we do need to let go but the young girl does so in knowing that she looked after the star so well.

Once you’ve finished reading the book, why not continue the story with these colourful shadow puppets and make your own adventures?
