I am a little worried that there hasn't been a movie so far based on the novel. (Tried and dropped 2 times - one during the MGR period and now Maniratnam). I wish the novel is soon made into a TV/film series. Well, I would run out of time if I keep talking about this book. I would say people who are interested in reading historical novels will definitely like this book. The stage is his world". The Hindu. 27 February 2009. Archived from the original on 3 March 2009 . Vanavan Madevi alias Idaya Pirattiyar: Empress of the Chola empire. Chief queen, wife and caretaker of Sundara Chola. Mother of all his children. Daughter of Thirukovalur Malaiyamaan. Although all of the female characters in PS are given equal attention throughout the book, the heroine Kundavai, the sister of Aditha Karikalan and Arulmozhivarman, is perhaps the most prominent one. She was widely regarded as the most powerful woman among the three Kundavai Pirattiyars mentioned in the Chozha literature. She was given the title Vallavaraiyar Vandhiyathevar Pirattiyar Aazhvar Parantakan Kundavai Pirattiyar in the Thanjavur temple inscriptions. Regarding the book’s romantic subgenre, the author made a wise choice in selecting the most well-developed love couple, Vandhiyathevan and Kundavi. Nandini – the Pazhuvur Queen:

The title Ponniyin Selvan literally translates to “Son of Kaveri / Cauvery” – Ponni is another name for the Cauvery river, and it is one of the best historical novels ever written in the Tamil language as it isn’t just an imaginative tale, but rather a historically accurate tale with little creativity. For his research, Kalki traveled to many places for researching his Ponniyin Selvan project. The endless debate on the historicity of Kalki’s account would be revived as film-maker Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan hits the screen at September-end. One thing I've learnt from reading this book is that everyone has a point of view and that we should not be judgemental about anyone. At first I hated the character Nandhini for all her doings. And then there came a part where the author justifies (atleast from her point of view) her actions. Vanathi, the Kodumbalur princess who falls in love with Arulmozhi; Poonkuzhali, the boat lady who paddles the future king to Lanka; Mandakini, the deaf and dumb stepmother of the first Maduranthaka Chola and Poonkuzhali’s aunt.
