About this deal

A utumnal fruit, apple compote and toasted nut aromas create a very attractive nose. Juicy melon flavours with hints of vanilla and cocoa nib sit alongside notes of lemon pith and nutmeg. Complex on the finish with nuances of fine oak. Terrible efforts that at best are no better than blends and at worst bring down the reputation of the distillery. If you buy a bottle of the Legacy, do yourself a favor and drink it on ice. I'm sure it's quite pleasant with ice and soda. Among the more unusual winners was Atom Brands, 10 YO Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire Single Malt Scotch Whisky. The tasting note described it as: In general, the whisky drinker derides these types of expressions as “supermarket whisky.” There’s the undisclosed age of the whisky (usually between five and eight years old). They’re normally presented at the lowest ABV of 40%, or sometimes a marginally more generous 43%. These are priced to compete with blends, driven by the desire for cash and not a love of whisky. In total: it’s thought that they’re to be avoided. Tomatin distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery in the village of Tomatin. Its whisky is classified as being from the Highland region, as it is 25 minutes south of Inverness.Without prejudice to the section Liability below, the Service may be temporarily unavailable during maintenance, updates, etc. We shall make reasonable efforts to inform you of any unavailability due to maintenance or updates. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. Other notable winners are Highland Park’s 15 YO Viking Heart Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Aberfeldy’s 16 YO and 21 YO expressions. The Glenmorangie Company won a Gold Outstanding medal for its Finest Reserve 19 YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Among Islay distillers, Laphroiag was the big winner, taking two Gold Outstanding medals for its 10 YO Sherry Oak Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky and its Select Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Islay whiskies marry particularly well with sweet wine casks, producing expressions that are smoky and with distinct fruity and sweet notes. Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise.

Splendidly extravagant with a rich flow of milk chocolate, smooth vanilla and sumptuous pears on the palate. The finish is long and weighty with a stunning flow of creamy nuttiness that keeps on going. Absolutely marvellous. The Isle of Skye 12 blows the doors off Legacy. Hands down. I'm going to save the rest of my Skye and use up this bottle of Legacy for the same purpose. It will be gone in about three or four more months of after dinner drinks with "whisky heathen" friends who can't learn the fine art of sipping a scotch and appreciating it. C'est la vie. In the mouth: Malty, oaky, very bourbon forward, actually my maximum amount of bourbon cask, then sherry sweetness arrives, bringing butter popcorn, fudgy traybake, charred sugar, toasted marshmallows, darker fruits like raisings and then baking spices and feeling a little raw. Conclusions: The distillery operated with only two stills until 1958. Starting at that time, they began to add stills to increase production capacity, eventually reaching production of 12.5 million litres of whisky per year during the 1970s. Although in 1987 Tomatin was referred to as the largest malt distillery in Scotland, [3] stills have been dismantled since the mid-1980s, bringing their total capacity to just over 5 million litres, though as of 2007, they were only producing 2.5 million litres. [2] Strong spices and wood aromas. Evolves to powerful red fruits with high alcohol. Water addition creates softer, sweeter notes of tropical fruit and vanilla spice. Sweet lengthy finish. On the nose: Fruit blossom, light stone fruits, deeper roasted pineapple, quite powerfully juicy and fruity, a little cream and vanilla fudge. Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. The IWSC judges, for their part, had this to say: “Seductively round, with delicious aromas of rich linseed and sweet honey, and ripe tropical fruit notes on the palate. Guava, papaya and mango all make an appearance, interspersed with star anise and fine oak tones which linger on the finish.” Inchmoan 12 YO and Glengarry 12 YO. The latter is matured in a combination of first fill and refill ex-Bourbon casks as well as re-charred ex-Bourbon casks. The tasting note for the Inchmoan 12 YO described it as:

Other standout winners included Ballantine’s Glenburgie 12 YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Most of Glenburgie’s whisky output is slated for Ballantine’s Blended Scotch Whisky, one of the top 5 blended whiskies in the world by volume. The distillery, significantly underappreciated, has also been releasing single malt whisky expressions. You could argue that Tomatin is closer to Speyside than Speyside distillery itself. You could also say all Speysiders are Highland drams, in that Speyside is a sub-region of the Highlands, so it does not matter (hence Macallan still proclaims to be a Highland dram). You could also say that regionality is pointless anyway for anything other than marketing, as there is no real common characteristic between regions beyond perhaps Islay peat, and even then it’s not always true. But no matter what your position, there is a uniqueness to Tomatin which is enjoyable. The Tomatin Legacy – which is a NAS release – refers to the important historical contribution that the distillery did for the town of the same name. It was the founding of the distillery that put the town on the map. Dozens of families came to live around the distillery, since it became their employer. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. It's owned by the Takara Shuzo company. Around eighty percent of Tomatin's whisky goes into blended whisky, including its own brands of Antiquary and Talisman.Regardless of whether the Service offers the functionality to contribute, you are solely responsible and liable for any content and information that you create, upload, post, publish, link to, duplicate, transmit, record, display or otherwise make available on the Service or to other Members, such as chat messages, text messages, videos, audio, audio recordings, music, pictures, photographs, text and any other information or materials, whether publicly posted or privately transmitted (“Contributions”). I have also tasted a number of dreadful independent bottlings, often overlong in finishing casks, where the Tomatin spirit has been bludgeoned to death. However, indie bottlings in bourbon are often great; their only challenge is meeting the price point delivered by the brand. Tomatin can be good at 40% ABV, better at 43%, and absolutely sings at 46%; I don’t believe it needs a cask strength presentation. All of this plays into Tomatin being one of the few distilleries where the official bottlings are my preference over independent releases. That series of events, a mixture of chance miscalculations, potential social pitfalls, and scheduling mistakes (all with fortunate outcomes) reminded me of the good old pre-COVID days of unrestricted fun. I recommend all of you get out there and enjoy yourselves if you are not already doing it. I also learned that this Tomatin Legacy loses most of its good qualities if it gets too cold, so ice is not recommended. It’s not ideal with a full-bodied cigar, as it gets overwhelmed by the smoke. Ardbeg 25 YO and the Ardbeg Wee 5 YO Beastie were both awarded Gold Outstanding medals. Glendronach, a distillery whose profile and medals has been rapidly rising under the deft hand of Master Distiller Rachel Barrie, was a triple winner. Glencadam, another little-known distillery, which is among Scotland’s oldest working distilleries, took three Gold Outstanding medals for its The Rather Dignified 15 YO, Reserva Andalusia Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish and American Oak Reserve Small Batch Malt Scotch Whisky. The latter is not yet available in the US market but is coming soon. Glencadam has been rapidly increasing its whisky lineup with a range of single barrel expressions as well as innovative cask finishes. For this article “what matters” is that Made Brave sent Malt a gift which ended up in my hands. It turned out to be a rather charming hip flask – not the actual one from the tear-jerking video, but a similar one – and a miniature of Tomatin 12 year old. That was rather well timed, as I had just opened a 1990s bottle of Tomatin 12 year old and it allowed me to do a side by side review for our readers, and also provided me with a little bit of material for a preamble to this review… so, thanks Tomatin. Tomatin have recently wielded the marketing tools more heavily than in times gone by. The ‘under the radar’ distillery is certainly taking a more prominent position. Global Brand Ambassador Scott Adamson has worked hard to build relationships and is often to be found turning up on interesting blogs and podcasts promoting the brand.
