About this deal

Told from alternating perspectives, While Paris Slept reflects on the power of love, resilience, and courage when all seems lost. Exploring the strength of family ties, and what it really means to love someone unconditionally, this debut novel will capture your heart. In 1944, to save her son from certain death, Sarah, a young mother, entrusts her newborn baby to Jean-Luc, a French railway worker, before being pushed onto a train to Auschwitz.

On a darkened platform, two destinies become entangled. Their choice will change the future in ways neither could have imagined... People and personalities have always fascinated me, and I studied psychology at Leicester University. Creating characters of my own in novels allows me to explore what it means to be human, in particular, what drives some people. I like to put characters in difficult situations where their morality is tested, and then add a twist. On a darkened platform, two destinies become entangled. Their choice will change the future in ways neither could have imagined.A powerful and poignant debut from a brilliant and bold new novelist' Imogen Kealey, author of Liberation Paris, 1944. A young woman's future is torn away in a heartbeat. Herded on to a train bound for Auschwitz, in an act of desperation she entrusts her most precious possession to a stranger. All she has left is hope. Si el final es el esperado, el epílogo, ya en 1968, es precioso. Me emocionó y me arrancó alguna lágrima.

While the first half of the book focuses on the historical aspect of 1944, the second half of the book plays out almost a decade later and is more of a family drama. Meet Sarah, a young Jewish woman who is ripped away from everything she knows and loves in Paris, leaving her with nothing but a deep sense of despair and a precious, life-changing decision to make. Meanwhile, in California, Jean-Luc is haunted by the ghosts of his past and struggling to come to terms with the atrocities he witnessed during the Nazi occupation of France. Furthermore, the author skillfully weaves historical events and real-life figures into the narrative, such as the Vel’ d’Hiv roundup and the role of the French Resistance. This adds depth and authenticity to the story, and highlights the bravery and sacrifices made by ordinary people during this dark chapter of history. Beautiful. Powerful. Luminous. Unforgettable. A stunning portrait of the brutality of war and the tenacity of love. In the tradition of Virginia Baily’s Early One Morning, M. L. Stedman’s The Light Between Oceans and Heather Morris’s The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

Veel tijd hebben ze niet om een beslissing te nemen…. De rest is hun verhaal en te lezen in dit mooie aangrijpende verhaal terwijl Parijs sliep! I absolutely loved it. An ingenious plot, wonderful believable characters and it moved me to tears. A fabulous read’ LESLEY PEARSE Made me think and cry and rage and smile at mankind's capacity for both terrible, heartbreaking cruelty and beautiful, selfless love' NATASHA LESTER

A young woman’s future is torn away in a heartbeat. Herded on to a train bound for Auschwitz, in an act of desperation she entrusts her most precious possession to a stranger. All she has left now is hope. Historical fiction fans, rejoice! A new voice has entered the arena and she's one to watch. A heartrending story told from the perspectives of two families living very different lives, it is also one of hope amid tragedy. Perfectly paced and plotted, and evocatively written - Woman & Home At times it felt over written and ‘cheesy’ but I had to listen to the end … else I’d feel complicit in their suffering. While Paris Slept is the debut novel by Ruth Druart and I’m astounded that it’s the author first book! A wonderful, heartbreaking story told in two timeframes and in varying voices, the power of love stands out strongly. Also, the strength of a mother’s love for her child and what she would do for that child is outstanding. While Paris Slept is one I’ll remember for a long time to come. Highly recommended.
