In the book PC 97 Hardware Design Guide, [9] Microsoft deprecated support for the RS-232 compatible serial port of the original IBM PC design.
USB RS232 Cable Series - FTDI
The Microsoft Update Catalog provides full access to a variety of important, recommended, and optional updates, incorporating hardware drivers. Each data or control circuit only operates in one direction, that is, signaling from a DTE to the attached DCE or the reverse.

TT may be generated by looping ST back with an appropriate phase change to align it with the transmitted data. The UT232R-200 is FTDI's premium USB to RS232 evaluation cable which can be used for testing the functionality of the FT232R device and drivers prior to design-in.RS232 was intended as a short distance (a few metres max) moderately low speed (9600 bps usual, up to about 100kbps in some cases, faster in very specialist situations), one device per port (exceptions proving the rule). Reading between the lines, you may be talking about the case where you have a board with an MCU which can be accessed (download code, debug, etc) via the USB port on your computer. It is assumed that both sides are initially silent (each TX is low), and then when a side wants to transmit a byte it does one or more high pulses (the "start bits"), sends each bit of the byte transmitted sequentially and then finishes with some more pulses ("stop bits"). Converters are supported with Microsoft WHQL certified VCP (Virtual Com Port) drivers for Windows, Apple Mac, and Linux.

According to the standard, male connectors have DTE pin functions, and female connectors have DCE pin functions.
This scheme was eventually codified in version RS-232-E (actually TIA-232-E by that time) by defining a new signal, "RTR (Ready to Receive)", which is CCITT V. Data is changed when the clock transitions from OFF to ON, and read during the ON to OFF transition. By using low-capacitance cables, communication can be maintained over larger distances up to about 300m (1,000ft).
