About this deal

Read the test results by comparing the color of the solution to the Nitrate Color Chart. The tube should be viewed in a well-lit area against the white area of the card. The closest match indicates the ppm (mg/L) of nitrate in the water sample. Rinse the test tube with clean water after use. pH is the measure of acidity in your water. A pH reading of 7.0 is neutral, a pH higher than 7.0 is alkaline, and a pH lower than this level is acidic. It is important to keep your aquarium at the appropriate pH level to ensure optimal water quality for your specific fish species, as different types of fish require different pH levels for their habitats. API® FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT will enable you to test the pH levels in your water as often as needed!

A pH of 7.0 is ideal when keeping a community aquarium containing a variety of tropical fish. That said, research is king in this department as each fish has their own recommended pH levels. Performing partial water changes can also help reduce nitrate, especially if the level is very high. However, because many tap water supplies contain nitrate, it can be difficult to lower nitrate levels by this method. We highly recommend testing your aquarium or pond water regularly, to ensure it remains a safe and healthy home for your fish. Testing of levels such as pH, ammonia, and nitrite can help you determine whether you may be overfeeding, and alert you to any potential issues early, when they are more easily treatable. If your water tests show that any of your water parameters are very high or very low, it is important to take steps to correct conditions for fish health and wellbeing. Monitoring the water chemistry of the aquarium or pond will allow you to catch problems before they develop. You don’t have to test all the parameters each time. I usually only test for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. The PH tests I sometimes perform by themselves, but I have not found the results from the PH tests to be helpful to me, so I usually skip them. Note that unless you come up with another test tube, the four provided with the kit will not allow you to perform all the testing at the same time; you will need to choose either the low or high range ph test. This shouldn’t be a problem; after you test once side by side, you should have an idea of which range applies to your tank.

MELAFIX™

Cap the test tube and shake vigorously for 1 minute. This step is extremely important to ensure the accuracy of test results.

I’m very happy with how API’s test kit works. It is cumbersome the first few times you perform all the test, but again, it gets faster and easier with practice. Taking a few minutes each week to maintain and monitor aquarium conditions is the key to a healthy aquarium. The FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT tests the parameters that affect the health of freshwater fish: pH, High Range pH, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate. The FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT is highly accurate and economical, and includes a computer calibrated, laminated color card, 4 test tubes and holding tray. The FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT comes with a complete, step-by-step instruction booklet, including information on how to correct unsafe water conditions.

Note that the API Freshwater Master Test Kit reads the total nitrate (NO3) level in parts per million ( ppm). Nitrate Test Directions Part of the learning curve for me getting into the aquarium hobby was familiarizing myself with water quality parameters. My first foray into fish keeping, as a child, didn’t involve much in the way of keeping healthy water. About all I understood was that tap water had chlorine and I needed to add dechlorinator when I performed a water change. API PH Test Kit (High Range) : This is the test for PH levels from 7.4 to 8.8. It has enough solution for around 160 tests. The bottom line of testing your aquarium water with API’s liquid test comes down to reading and following exactly the instructions they provide ( API’s pdf instructions are here). It is a bit daunting in that all 5 test are unique and require slightly different instructions. They all start in the same way, and that is to fill a clean test tube (provided) with 5 ml of aquarium water (up to a white line on the side).Note that when they say to wait for 5 minutes, this is the minimum time you need to allow for the color to change in the solution. In my observation, you can read the results any time after this; even up to hours later, the color holds the same. By the time I finish the last test, it has often been almost 5 minutes of wait time for the first test (Nitrate).
