About this deal

If Oakes was about to ruin H. G. Christie, by pulling his money out of the Bahamas, and calling the loans he made to the man, why would he let Harold Christie sleep in his house? Not just one night, but two nights and possibly longer if the murder hadn’t taken place. The Ballot Party is credited for playing a massive role in the establishment of the multiracial Government High School in 1925.

The Duke’s methods of bringing about justice came under scrutiny; one British civil servant cabled to London: “The Governor is at some pains to explain why he took the rather unusual step of calling in men from outside, which I must confess I don’t very much like. But in the circs [sic] I will not question his judgement.”

Alfred de Marigny

Another, proposed by Nassau newspaper editor John Marquis, was that the murder was orchestrated to prevent Oakes from moving his money off the island and that the Duke of Windsor was complicit in a cover-up by hiring corrupt detectives. Oakes obtained his massive wealth in the Kirkland Lake gold mine in Ontario, Canada, after searching for gold in Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Congo and Death Valley in Eastern California.

Only person left is Mrs. Newell Kelly wife of property manager. Husband is away. Mrs. Kelly lives in the guest house with her mother. The guest house is away from the main house. In 1959, Gardner spoke at a Rotary Club luncheon in Miami. Asked his favorite stories, he listed the one that really happened: the Harry Oakes murder. The chief suspect was Oakes’ eccentric son-in-law Count Marie Alfred de Fouquereaux de Marigny, a 33-year-old Mauritian, who had eloped with Oakes’ 18-year-old daughter, Nancy, in Mexico. Nancy was his third wife. The two had met in New Providence. The New Englander, born in Maine, had dropped out of medical school when word came that gold had been found in the Yukon. For the next 15 years, his search for gold failed around the globe: Death Valley, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines and the Congo.
