The lyrics of the song that played while she was led into custody sum it up: “I’m just a soul whose intentions are good, oh lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood. College professors and MFA graduates turn up their noses at commercial fiction and preach the higher arts. Before the murders, Lorraine had been in an abusive marriage and lost her baby due to her husband’s violence. Stay Close is about three people who are haunted by the past, both desiring and fearing elements of the lives they used to live, along with the choices they have made in leaving the past behind them. This has probably been the weakest of the Coben thrillers that I’ve read, but like all of his other books is the interesting characters that help drive the plot.

Unfortunately for him, Dave recognizes Carlton’s car once the details of his disappearance hits the news. Stewart — who was violently obsessed with Megan — was Lorraine’s victim in 2004, and she’d ensured that Megan would stumble upon his body so that she’d know she was “safe” from him. A flashback sequence begins with Carlton attempting to drug Kayleigh, and how she steals his car keys. Can the three individual characters find one another before they become a pawn to a dangerous game or become a victim on the hit-list of a ruthless contract killer couple?I will be waiting for his next book, crossing my fingers, hoping that this book was not a taste of things to come. The person stalking Megan throughout Stay Close’s present timeline isn’t Stewart, although certain breadcrumbs attempt to convince viewers that it’s him. This book definitely shows that no matter how we try to hide and bury our secrets from our past they will always in some way influence our present. Therefore, I would also tell people who don’t usually read thrillers but would like to try one, to pick up Stay Close.

His most recent adaptation for Netflix, Stay Close, premiered on December 31, 2021 and stars Cush Jumbo, James Nesbitt, and Richard Armitage. Unlike Megan, Ray picks up the body, takes it to a concealed location, hacks it into tiny pieces and drops it into a body of water — all to protect Megan, whom he believes murdered Stewart.

The latest series to be adapted from Harlan Coben's addictive novel is now on Netflix and fans are bingeing to their hearts content. Another is now here and Stay Close promises more of almost exactly the same – including Richard Armitage, who is now seedy photographer Ray and, by the end of the opening episode, about to become firmly tied into the main plot. The past destroyed Ray, and Megan wonders if she'd be better off as she was rather than with the husband and kids. In the same episode, we hear police detective Brian Goldberg (Jack Shalloo) on the phone with Ken telling them to kill Megan, but the eventually turn the tables on him.

He also knew Megan back in her Cassie days, and may have photographed a key piece of evidence in the Carlton Flynn case. Meanwhile, Richard Armitage and Sarah Parish make up the rest of the main characters as Ray Levine and Lorraine Giggs respectively. As each one faces their own private hell, they soon find a story that has been lurking between the lines of their boring present and their dark, exciting past. And just when it seems impossible that they might resolve their situation he will throw them a life-line or they will exceed their own and the reader’s expectations and the story continues. Taking on the leading role is Cush Jumbo as Megan Pierce, a woman leading a seemingly perfect family life who soon gets a blast from the past that pulls her back to her previous life.

Stay Close’’s Two Biggest (and Confusing Let’s Explain ‘Stay Close’’s Two Biggest (and Confusing

I was disappointed in this book when compared to many of his past books, which I have greatly enjoyed. At a safe distance from Vipers, the girls leave the car before they’re picked up by Dave, who drives his daughter and her friend home without any questions. Megan though, who pieced together the story from both of them, and had disposed of Carlton’s distinctive necklace in the sea to protect Kayleigh, knows what really happened. Megan Pierce is a suburban mum living in the fictional suburb of Livingstone, and is hiding a murky past. But if you’re here, that means you’re ready for some answers — so expect some massive spoilers ahead.

Yes, about three quarters of the way through but I did keep reading to the end anyway just to make sure I was right and also to get one or two things straight in my mind which just were not making any sense to me. I can't bring myself to give only one star to a book I actually finished, but as I said, the plot is the one thing it has going for it and I wanted to know the ending. Don't know if HC wanted us to feel sympathy for their victims by describing their methods of torture (not too graphic, but implied).
