About this deal

The ninth is Pakistan’s conflicted and complicated founding father, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, a spectral presence. Suzy Hanson’s “Notes on a Foreign Land” is a far better example of a journo trying to unlock and understand a complex nation.

Prior to joining the University, he was a career Foreign Service Office from 1982 until 2011, serving in Germany, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, the United States Military Academy at West Point and Washington.Walsh falls in love with Pakistan not only because of its history and beautiful scenery, but because he finds the people to be warm, hospitable, and fun-loving. You’re quoting Sadat Hasan Manto, a giant of 20th century Urdu literature, with regard to Pakistani history, culture, and politics. Walsh is a rare foreign correspondent who doesn’t condescend, a storyteller who lets his characters speak. Walsh experienced first-hand the consequences of delving too far into the ‘divided nation’ of Pakistan as a result of publicising details that their government did not want revealed. While such persons exist in Pakistan and are favorite topics in Western media accounts, they are the exception rather than the rule.

Steeped in fact this books draws on the atrocities and political standoffs that created a divided nation. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.

For me, the book kindled old and intense memories, and provided an update on what has transpired since my departure. With a razor-sharp eye and propensity for detail, this is the definitive guide to the much-misunderstood country. Very good non fiction work, especially for readers who are eager to know about multiple variables prevailing in this diversified region. With the worlds fifth largest population and a worldwide diaspora, it is remarkable how little understood Pakistan is. Walsh captures the heart of a country brutalised by years of military dictatorship, scarred by religious bigotry and crippled by conflicts that have left it prey to outside powers .

The result is an ideal book for a reader with little or no exposure to Pakistan, who nevertheless wants to read one inclusive book that provides an accurate rendering of the fundamentals. Furthermore this book feels out of date, and the author should have drawn out his narrative more fully to 2020.
