He remembered waking up next to her in the morning with horror in his heart, and how, after dressing, he’d been irresistibly drawn to the bedroom window, which had a view across the road of steel barriers at the top of the steps, the tangled wilderness beyond. Then why let a journalist stir it all up again now if there’s a risk of it affecting house prices?’

The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish | Goodreads

To report on our triumph, of course. They’ll want to follow the progress of the project, you know, document the journey.’ She pulled a face. ‘I know, don’t say it, you hate that word. Everything’s a journey now, even putting out the bins.’ I haven’t read much of Louise Candlish’s work so far but am keen to read more since I read her book, Our House and watched the TV adaptation. Wow, what a read! The Only Suspect was a twisty thriller and I did not guess the ending! Even after finishing the book, I kept thinking about all the clues I missed while reading Alex’s stories across the years. Kelly, QLD, 5 Stars

Alex leidt een fijn leven met zijn vrouw Beth in een mooie Londense buitenwijk. Hij is wat op zichzelf, maar wel vriendelijk; een goede echtgenoot en buurman. In other words, this 10.5-hour audiobook easily could have unfolded in 7.5 hours, without compromising any elements of the storyline. This book is phenomenal. The twists and turns it takes had me gasping and wondering how it will all end because there are so many things and scenes that i haven't predicted. Alex is surprised when his wife Beth tells him about the nature trail that is going to be built near their house. He’s got nothing against nature, but there’s something buried there from years ago that he doesn’t want found.

The Only Suspect Marianne (Wollongong, 02, Australia)’s review of The Only Suspect

I loved The Only Suspect: a heady dose of mid Nineties nostalgia, with trademark whiplash twists and satire. Louise Candlish has surpassed her own, always high standards. Quite possibly her best yet Alex lives a comfortable life with his wife Beth in the leafy suburb of Silver Vale. Fine, so he’s not the most extrovert guy on the street, he prefers to keep to himself, but he’s a good husband and an easy-going neighbour. Let’s have a look,’ he said, returning to the present, and she passed him her phone, a WhatsApp thread named ‘Trailblazers’ growing in front of his eyes. Christ, how he’d preferred life before you were subjected to these streams of other people’s consciousness; he had enough on his plate wrangling his own. Sometimes when he looked at her, at that enviably sharp jawline, those bright, busy eyes the exact same shade of burnt umber as her hair, he caught himself wondering how he had come to have this wife and not the one he’d once fantasized about. How he’d come to find himself here, in Silver Vale, of all places, resident now for over a decade and passing for the most part as a contented suburban husband and homeowner. The story that unfolds is taut and complex, and the sense of impending doom kept me riveted. There are plenty of secrets to be unearthed, and both timelines are equally compelling. There are plenty of twists and red herrings along the way but the final reveal blew me away.Candlish controls the drip feed of information and ramps up the tension to great effect -- The Guardian Alex is living his best suburban lief with Beth until the creation of a nature trail is announced, threatening to expose decades-old secrets. You, cynical? Surely not.’ There was more than a trace of indulgence in her tone and he grinned roguishly at her, finally finding the right mode, the one he’d perfected, the one she was used to. I'm blown away by how good it is. A gripping tale of love, secrets and deception - it's the best psychological thriller I've read in a long time Such a vivid sense of place, a gripping plot, elegantly told, and a twist that left me reeling - brilliant!

You’ll have a delightful sense of disorientation on the long road to discovering how the two storylines are connected, before arriving at the immensely satisfying conclusion -- Daily Express/Daily Mirror Alex lives a comfortable life with his wife Beth in the leafy suburb of Silver Vale. Fine, so he’s not the most sociable guy on the street, he prefers to keep himself to himself, but he’s a good husband and an easy-going neighbour. This is a bit of a slow burn but all of the detail from the past is needed to understand the outcome of the story.Alex lives a comfortable life with his wife, Beth, in the leafy suburb of Silver Vale. Fine, so he’s not the most extroverted guy on the street, he prefers to keep himself to himself, but he’s a good husband and an easy-going neighbour. A twisting, seductive, ingenious thriller from the consistently brilliant Louise Candlish. I'm a huge fan A nature trail is being constructed near Alex and Beth’s home. Most of the neighbourhood is looking forward to this by Alex is terrified that a secret will be unearthed. Just as you think you might have it all figured out some bombshells are dropped - as does my jaw! The twists keep on coming and coming especially towards the end and as per usual Louise Candlish has me perched on the edge of my seat, super glued to the dramatic events of the plot.
