This is the story of how I decided to seek the help of a professional makeup artist. But not just any makeup artist. I wanted the help of Hannah Martin, the the wedding makeup artist to Princess Eugenie. Now, I hate face powder. Even if my base is done correctly, I'd rather walk around like a shining disco ball than dust powder on my face. However, Martin may have talked me into coming round to the occasional dusting of the stuff to set my makeup. My son was five before my daughter came along and from the age of two he was playing with whatever make-up he found lying around, and instead of chastising him for that, I actively encouraged it. I didn’t want him to grow up with any gender stereotypical, ‘I’m a boy, therefore I mustn’t like make-up’. If he wanted to grow up wearing make-up, I’d be ok with that. Parents have a bit of responsibility where make-up is a debate - have a look what’s out there. If you’re worried about the styles your children are emulating, maybe look on social media and see if there’s someone’s style you like and direct them that way, rather than just telling them you don’t like what they’re doing, or what they’re doing is wrong. One morning, as I was going through my usual makeup routine I started to really think about what I was doing: was I using the right moisturiser before my foundation? Take them to the beauty counter Most brides have a few months at least to plan their weddings (current circumstances have thrown this into question for some, I know) but self-care, especially skincare is particularly important. Some brides focus so much on the makeup that they neglect the canvas. It’s a great opportunity to help get your skin into condition so your makeup sits flawlessly on the big day. The greatest thing anyone can do for their skin is drink a lot of water. That’s right-you don’t have to spend hundreds of pounds on fancy treatments; drinking straight water does wonders for your skin. Don’t do anything new in the days prior to the wedding Often I’ll show young people photos and say, ‘Look at Jennifer Lawrence and how glowing and fresh her skin is and how natural her brows are’.I’ve spoken to young people and shown them how to do various bits of make-up in a way I feel is more flattering. Often, young people are copying what they’ve seen online, but they don’t necessarily recognize it’s not as flattering on them as the person they saw do it. So I think it can be helpful if you can teach and coach there’s a way to do things that’s still impactful and cool, but maybe look a bit more natural. Family Life I always ask my brides to show me pictures of makeup looks that they like to help me understand better the kind of look they’re after on their wedding day. All too often I’m shown pictures of people with completely different colouring and features so I’ve learnt to ask my brides, alongside these inspiration images, to show me a picture of themselves that they really like so together we can identify what exactly made them feel most beautiful and incorporate that into their wedding day look. 2. My daughter loves it, she’s got a wooden playset, a few old bits of mine and she enjoys putting it on herself and me. But I make it really clear this is playtime – I don’t want to instill in her an idea that she (or mummy) has to wear make-up to beautiful, I spend a lot of time make-up free.
