Celebrity make-up artist Hannah Martin has two children - three and eight years old. Here she gives her advice on how to talk to children about make-up. Don’t be afraid to talk about and play with make-up from an early age When Martin asked me about blush, I blushed at my response. I told her that I dusted on the tiniest amount of pink-hued powder on my cheeks because I knew that I was (according to most makeup artists) supposed to. I was particularly scared of it after my dramatic hair colour change. However, after some gentle convincing, Martin showed me that it's all in choosing the correct shade. I needed a very light pink, preferably two-toned rather than one stark, bright pink colour.

This is the story of how I decided to seek the help of a professional makeup artist. But not just any makeup artist. I wanted the help of Hannah Martin, the the wedding makeup artist to Princess Eugenie. Now, I hate face powder. Even if my base is done correctly, I'd rather walk around like a shining disco ball than dust powder on my face. However, Martin may have talked me into coming round to the occasional dusting of the stuff to set my makeup. My son was five before my daughter came along and from the age of two he was playing with whatever make-up he found lying around, and instead of chastising him for that, I actively encouraged it. I didn’t want him to grow up with any gender stereotypical, ‘I’m a boy, therefore I mustn’t like make-up’. If he wanted to grow up wearing make-up, I’d be ok with that. Parents have a bit of responsibility where make-up is a debate - have a look what’s out there. If you’re worried about the styles your children are emulating, maybe look on social media and see if there’s someone’s style you like and direct them that way, rather than just telling them you don’t like what they’re doing, or what they’re doing is wrong. Help boys interested in make up by introducing them to some of the biggest male make-up stars around With 20 years of experience in the beauty industry, Hannah Martin’s makeup talents are widely recognised amongst Royals, credited by celebrities, and have been witnessed on runways. Known for her warm and approachable attitude to beauty, her tips & tutorials are always sought after and respected by her loyal followers.

One morning, as I was going through my usual makeup routine I started to really think about what I was doing: was I using the right moisturiser before my foundation? Was I applying concealer that made my fine lines look worse? Is there another way I can define my brows without painstakingly drawing on tiny hairlike lines? It then occurred to me that maybe I should ask a professional rather than just hoping someday the answers would magically pop into my head. So that's exactly what I did.

That’s why I advocate having a separate make-up bag that holds just a few essentials for your day-to-day or for when you find yourself tearing around in a hurry. You can just grab the bag and know you have everything you need for a speedy make-up that could actually really positively impact your day. Growing up through the ranks at Bobbi Brown she has since gone on to appear on Channel 5's '10 Years Younger in 10 Days' series as their resident beauty expert - winning the show Best Fashion and Makeup Show at the 2021 National Reality TV Awards. When you think of some of the biggest influencers in beauty at the moment, like James Charles and Mmmmitchell, these are young men saying to other guys and girls you can do whatever you want. Society is so much more accepting of that. Look at someone like Mario Dedivanovic, he’s been so open about his journey and how he walked into Sephora and couldn’t recognize what that feeling was, but he recognized it as being inspiration. He’s now one of the world’s leading make-up artists with his own line. So there are a lot of male, aspirational make-up artists who I think are really encouraging those who want to explore make-up and they will feel like they can because there are other people out there who are doing it. For young guys now who love make up, thankfully there are loads of people out there to aspire to and be trained by virtually. Take them to the beauty counter Most brides have a few months at least to plan their weddings (current circumstances have thrown this into question for some, I know) but self-care, especially skincare is particularly important. Some brides focus so much on the makeup that they neglect the canvas. It’s a great opportunity to help get your skin into condition so your makeup sits flawlessly on the big day. The greatest thing anyone can do for their skin is drink a lot of water. That’s right-you don’t have to spend hundreds of pounds on fancy treatments; drinking straight water does wonders for your skin. Then getting into good habits like exfoliating regularly and feeding your skin with serums (I love Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair) under your moisturiser will also help. Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base is the perfect makeup base for your big day. 3. Don’t do anything new in the days prior to the wedding Often I’ll show young people photos and say, ‘Look at Jennifer Lawrence and how glowing and fresh her skin is and how natural her brows are’.I’ve spoken to young people and shown them how to do various bits of make-up in a way I feel is more flattering. Often, young people are copying what they’ve seen online, but they don’t necessarily recognize it’s not as flattering on them as the person they saw do it. So I think it can be helpful if you can teach and coach there’s a way to do things that’s still impactful and cool, but maybe look a bit more natural. She was the makeup artist for Kate Middleton on her wedding day in 2011. In 2020 she was featured in Vogue, Britain. She has also served as the makeup artist for Princess Eugenie on her wedding day. Family Life I always ask my brides to show me pictures of makeup looks that they like to help me understand better the kind of look they’re after on their wedding day. All too often I’m shown pictures of people with completely different colouring and features so I’ve learnt to ask my brides, alongside these inspiration images, to show me a picture of themselves that they really like so together we can identify what exactly made them feel most beautiful and incorporate that into their wedding day look. 2. Prioritise your skin

My daughter loves it, she’s got a wooden playset, a few old bits of mine and she enjoys putting it on herself and me. But I make it really clear this is playtime – I don’t want to instill in her an idea that she (or mummy) has to wear make-up to beautiful, I spend a lot of time make-up free. But I make it fun if we’re playing, it’s creative, escapism time when we’re doing it. Make sure children understand that they are beautiful no matter what…

This selection of vegan brushes containssynthetic fibres that have been designed to be perfectly straight and firm, allowing precise and detailed application. I’ve always encouraged make-up play. Some people I’ve met have grown up thinking make-up is taboo or vain or frivolous and I don’t want them to grow up with and negative connotations towards make-up. Other things that can be handy are mints (again, champagne and nerves can play havoc with your breath!), a hanky (tissues can disintegrate on the face and even worse, get in your eyes and cause them to stream but a little dab of a handkerchief prevents that), an atomiser with your favourite fragrance - it’s always nice to have a little fragrance spruce! 6. Avoid using a foundation with SPF
