About this deal

One of the particularly interesting things about Any Man was how Amber Tamblyn blurred the lines between reality and fiction, including Tweets ‘from’ real celebrities and politicians commenting on the assaults. I loved the writing style, at one point I forgot this was fiction, needless to say I was very impressed with Amber Tamblyn. there's this one scene where some guys are sitting in a bar drinking and talking about this offender when a woman walks in and suddenly they all stop talking and switching their drinks to water.

Jennifer brings up an interesting point regarding being made to penetrate… Meryl, tell me what you’re reading on social media about this SHOCKING story. This is, far and away, the only book I have read in literally a decade that has made me this emotional and awe-inspired. In that way, Tamblyn's book is critical because it believes so wholeheartedly in the most fundamental power of art: to awaken minds by evoking empathy.

It’s ironic that this character would then go on to be raped and have feminists rally around him, even though he's spent years demonizing them. I was curious why Amber Tamblyn decided to have Maude’s transgendered victim, Michael Parker, kill himself instead of giving him a voice instead of letting him appear as a viewpoint character. this has great commentaries about how the society treats rape victims and how you always have to prove that something bad has happened to you.

Crossing forms and styles, she makes each voice unique and distinct and the book almost compels you to read it. She has spoken openly, for example, about an ex-boyfriend who assaulted her at a nightclub in Hollywood, dragging her out of the venue “by my private parts”. You live within the characters as they speak; you watch the news, you read the tweets, you see the texts.Although the attacks are a huge part of the story, we begin to see the MCs start the beginning stages of healing. I do think books and shows, done with good intention, are an extra source of light to shine on the issues women face. When he started moving against me, grinding (there I said it) I told myself it was just the bus swaying back and forth. You ever start reading a book and know immediately that it was going to be something different than what you've ever read before?

She also knows that makes her a target of sorts, like when her husband David Cross participated in an interview for his show “Arrested Development” that sounded like the men were excusing abusive behavior. I had really severe carpal tunnel syndrome and De Quervain syndrome in both arms … if I typed for long periods of time, my arms would go numb. When it comes to violence against men, some people are actually saying what many have been thinking: Men are getting what they deserve. We also get to see the way the victims are treated in the media and it is horrendous, first, Donald is screwed over by a female reporter after promising him they won’t talk about the specifics of the attack and then proceeds to question him on nothing but that and makes references to the fact he might have been cheating on his wife when he wasn’t.

Why do we, as a society, blame the victim, use them as the story of the day and then toss them aside when something more horrifying comes alone?

Perhaps it’s easier to ignore the insanity of the world churning out the same words again and again when the page is always refreshing. In her blazingly original and unforgettable debut novel Any Man, Amber Tamblyn brings to startling life a specter of sexual violence in the shadowy form of Maude, a female serial rapist who preys on men.

I think it's important to show women that we are not alone in our experiences, to show others what those experiences can be and load up our arsenals with the options we see that might save our lives, should we ever need to.
