About this deal

Nikki/Victoria is not a great mum. Her biggest flaw is that she needs to have a man in her life to feel complete – the reason why she stayed with an abusive spouse and the reason behind some of her more maddening decisions after they leave. But, she’s not completely hopeless. After all, the entire reason that they leave is because Jay, the abusive spouse/father, hit Jayni/Lola Rose for the first time. And apart from her deep-seated need to have a man around, she’s not that bad of a mum. She knows that she can do better but she is trying and does her best to take care of their emotional and physical needs. Jayni/Lola Rose might have been parentified because of her mum’s fatal flaw, but she has a mum who is trying.

Something I often struggle with in Jacqueline Wilson books is the characters refuse to engage with Social Services or any sort of support. A good message for children in this book would’ve been about how it’s okay to ask for help, and how there are charities out there who can give support. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: I’ll always be jealous of authors who can use words to captivate you in ways you never imagined! This one has been immediately added to my favorite books of 2022 for how amazing it was! Colorful and riveting close-ups of infants from Bolivia, Peru, Russia, China, and beyond. These picture books are the perfect way to introduce your child to new cultures. Parents looking to instill gender equality at a young age will love the reminder that not all baby girls around the world are treated the same — but all children deserve to be loved. Kids who squeal, “Baby!” when they see other little ones will adore the portraits. Expect to read this picture book again and again.

This could have been a 5 star book, but it was a little too long, a little too “let’s wrap everything up in a bow”, but the first half was simply incredible. Incredible, incredible. Dikembe is a character that will stay with me for a long time.

I will be honest in saying that I thought I might end up finding this book boring because at first it just felt like regular storytelling. When it started to get a mystery vibe and I started to infer the themes embedded in this book including what it means to win in life and reclaim one's identity, my attention was undoubtedly bought. Jaye even managed to chip in a really beautiful romance.I normally dislike historical fiction with an alternating future perspective uncovering what we're already being told by the historical perspective. Based on the premise which only mentioned Dikembe and Lowra as children, I didn't expect that to be the case here, but it was. I didn't enjoy Lowra's adult perspective very much and tended to skim through those sections. I think the book would have been more effective if it focused mainly on the two protagonists as children and developing their parallels and differences that way instead of making everything glaringly obvious through Lowra's adult perspective.
