The opposition Revisionist Zionists, who evolved into today's Likud party, sought Eretz Yisrael Ha-Shlema—Greater Israel, or literally, the Whole Land of Israel (shalem, meaning complete). Goliath's tone is frank and unflinching as it reveals how Israel's history of occupation has had a corrupting influence on its own citizens and politicians. Blumenthal came to Israel looking for racists, bigots, Zionist extremists, Arab haters, land stealers, settlers, crazed rabbis, Jewish supremacists, messianists, maniacs and near lunatics and by golly he found them, interviewed them and put them in his book.The rise of Lieberman more or less demarcates Blumenthal’s temporal focus, though Blumenthal is good about providing contextual analysis to contemporary matters. Annexation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip was part of the platform of the mainstream Israeli Likud party, and of some other, often more extreme Israeli political parties. Goliath would certainly be appropriate for classroom use, though it has potential to be one of those fabled “controversial texts,” as it was produced and marketed for a general readership. Greater Israel ( Hebrew: ארץ ישראל השלמה, Eretz Yisrael Hashlema) is an expression, with several different biblical and political meanings over time.

The jewish Israelis because of slowly losing their sense of justice and getting away from a democratic environment, something which they say is the situation in many of the countries surrounding Israel. Max Blumenthal’s Goliath generated significant discussion upon its release—including a protracted debate between Blumenthal and Eric Alterman in the pages of the Nation— and considerable criticism of the book’s lack of objectivity. At the culmination of a transitional phase that began after the second intifada and the collapse of the Camp David talks, and really the collapse of the peace process, what we are seeing right now is the state of Israel, Jewish state acting out the terminal phase of Zionism.

A brave and unflinching account of the real facts on the ground, Goliath is an unprecedented and compelling work of journalism. The debate and criticism, however, usually missed the point: Blumenthal presents a preponderance of evidence that leads inevitably to a sort of judgment that surpasses the verisimilitude of balance. My book, I think, will have a long shelf life, it might be an evergreen book hopefully, even if it doesn’t get the attention it deserves.
