That brought me up short. For Oot, that's a simple question. If you meet someone and play with them, they're you're friend. Easy. My most recent experience of the book was listening to it with my little boy on a long car ride. I wasn't sure he'd be able to get into it. Not because of the vocabulary. He's very sharp for being 4.5. He's good with words. But sometimes he gets a little scared. Tl;dr - A delightful, very creepy and haunting story that will have both adults and children turning on the nightlights after darkness falls. A great, smart heroine who takes the initiative and acts with purpose. Highly recommended. The creep factor is so immense thanks to Gaiman's writing skills and him seemingly wanting to traumatize people, the clever and first peaceful way, by generating more and more suspense until it escalates without much real violence. It´s more the permanent feeling of something being terribly wrong, more and more disturbing signs appearing, and the final realization of the protagonist what really is behind the seemingly better reality. So one message could be to It is interesting to read in Caroline Frost’s warm appreciation of the films how well-known actors came and went over the years – and why – plus some guest one-off appearances… this volume neatly rounds up many aspects of the series for those who want to surround themselves with nostalgic memories of British films that were very much of their time. It was lovely to read about each individual cast member and what they went through filming each movie...who would have thought they had been on a tight ship and only ever filmed each movie on set...such is the glamour of a carry on star. NetGalley, sue plant Eleven-year-old Coraline Jones is incredibly bored in her family's new flat, so off exploring she goes! In Coraline's family's new flat are twenty-one windows and fourteen doors. Thirteen of the doors open and close.I felt Frost’s love of this franchise from her warm and affectionate introduction to the end, where I’ll admit I cried after being overtaken by so many heartfelt memories. She sets the scene with some familiar comic memories of characters from the Carry on films. She then explains what this book is and isn’t, and tells that the book tells of, There are few villains that still frighten me to this day quite like the button-eyed Other Mother of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline. While, sure, this is a book for younger readers, but Coraline is a terrifying little tale that even adults can take to heart and feel inspired by 9year old Coraline as she learns that being ‘ being brave didn’t mean you weren’t scared,’ as Gaiman explains in his forward, ‘ being brave meant you were scared, really scared, badly scared, and you did the right thing anyway.’ This twisted coming-of-age story examines finding oneself as well as a sense of home, made all the more sinister when evil seeks to seduce you into their grasps by playing off of your loneliness and frustrations during periods of upheaval. Gaiman has crafted a delightfully spooky modern fairy tale that is sure to charm readers of any age with his whimsical imagination, foreboding vibes and empowering moral messages, and, best of all, his sharp and witty heroine, Coraline Jones. We knew the Carry On films without really knowing them. Caroline Frost puts that right. A fascinating story." - Adrian Chiles P.S. I wonder if the 'other mother' in this book was called The Beldam after La belle dame sans merci. *shrug* Something to ponder. For this story, I utilized a reading technique called immersion reading (listening to the audiobook while following along in a copy of the text). Neil Gaiman himself narrated the audiobook. Listening to him is quite a treat. His enthusiasm is enchanting, and when he reads his own work, it feels like he is in the room with you, your very own personal reading, like the very best campfire story.

The Baby Group: a gripping crime thriller with a twist you

One moment in the book that I did like was when Mrs. Scott was still in the house after Carrie’s birth, and Mary, Laura, and Charles returned from the Indian camp. (That was rather clever, too, inserting Caroline’s labor as the reason for why they went to the camp that day). Caroline has a brief moment of perspective where she sees her children as Mrs. Scott must see them. I really enjoyed that, and perhaps that’s one of the elements missing from the book - more connection with the children, who we grew up with. Caroline spends most of the book thinking of them as a chore and a job, and yes, children are, but they also bring us joy - and there’s none of that in this book. One especially dull and rainy day traps young Coraline inside the new house. Her parents are busy and she must entertain herself. She finds a little door in the drawing room and a little key that fits in. LOL So funny and so true of children. I'm glad Gaiman isn't trying to make Coraline into a 'little adult.' And, now that I think about it, nor is he trying to force some kind of 'healthy eating' agenda down readers' throats. Ugh, I hate that shit. Instead, he's absolutely captured childhood with perfection. Coraline' is about a little girl named Coraline, who was exploring her house when she came acrossa tiny little door that brought her to the other world. I do find the nature of the other world really unique and the way that the story was written made me feel like I'm Coraline herself. As for my rating, i do wish that the story had more information on the three ghost children and how Miss Spink and Miss Forcible had gotten the stone they gave to Coraline. I do think that the message of 'Coraline' is to be careful what you wish for and to have courage to face the issue. For adults these things are harder. And it's doubly hard for me these days. My life has changed so much over the last five years, and my previously established metric for friendship doesn't work very well any more. If like me you have been brought up on the Carry On franchise then this is a gem of a book. It gives you insights and fact about the films and their stars and theres some great behind the scenes pictures. I did lots of reminiscing and there was so many, "oh I forgot about that one moments"! The only problem with this book is, I still cant decide which my favourite Carry On film is! NetGalley, Zoey Arato I have always loved watching horror or creepy movies since I was a kid so when I was a kid I watched Coraline movie. I wasn't born as a reader, so I didn't read the book first before watching the movie :( and I loved it so much! I still remember those days when I watched the movie and I felt my heart pounded so hard inside my chest and it was actually one of my favorite movies. I watched it all over again and again and I even watched it again with my best friend and she totally loved it too. So months ago I decided to read the book because I loved the movie when I was a kid and I liked the book so much! it was my first book in 2017. The cat is perhaps my favourite character of all. Gaiman knows cats well; they appear elsewhere in his works. And this one is the genuine article: superior, stand-offish, wilful, easily offended, and yet a true friend. It is not a novel full of action but a gentle reflective novel, although there were some scenes that made me catch my breath. It is obvious a lot of research has gone into it and it shows in the descriptions, the daily scenes, the hardships of life on the land and the dangers and attitudes of the time. Some scenes had me teary or fondly remembering scenes from the TV show. I am not one who usually enjoys sex scenes as they are often clumsy and graphic. In this book that aspect is tastefully handled. It shows two people whose love for each other is paramount, making love not just having sex. This book, is not for children as some daily life scenes are harsh, but for adults who want a deeper understanding of love, marriage, working together and following a dream.

The Spa Break: A laugh out loud and heartwarming novel about

The story is odd, strange, even slightly bizarre, but kids will hang on every word. Coraline is a character with whom they will surely identify, and they will love being frightened out of their shoes. This is just right for all those requests for a scary book. Grades 6-8. Essential reading for fans of the Carry On Films which were deceptively ahead of their times' - Tracy-Ann ObermanFor me, it was also a really interestingly written book. The sentences are short, punchy, and vivid in a way that made me feel like I was there with Coraline, going into danger and finding a way to be brave. Thoroughly researched and accompanied with a reading club guide, a book list, and a note from the author, this is the Little House story that all of us have been longing to jump into. Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.’ I only wish one thing from this book, that it had been one that I could have shared with my dad, who sadly passed away many years ago. Yet, reading between the lines of this book and then watching Carry on Matron (1972) soon after with my Darlin Husband, I felt like I was watching this film through both his and the author’s eyes.

Skincare: The New Edit - The award-winning, no-nonsense guide

She describes this trip so vividly that you then feel you are her travel companion. On arriving at Pinewood studios, Frost then takes you on a mini-tour of Pinewood Studios pointing out street names and cast photos and then remembering films made in Heatherden Hall – the “beating heart of Pinewood Studios” – and its gardens. I love the way Gaiman takes on fairy tale attributes here. Keys and mirrors are frequent in the book, and Coraline literally enters a mirror world at the risk of being trapped there forever. She also has three neighbors who she visits on both sides of the mirror, and cycles of 3 is a common motif in fairy tale narratives. He toys around with tropes in humorous ways to fit his themes of self-identity, such as in the mirror world where her neighbor can actually call her by the correct name but she is then told by the cat that names are meaningless. ‘ Now you people have names,’ he tells her, ‘ that's because you don't know who you are. We know who we are, so we don't need names.’ The idea of naming something in a fairy tale often means taking power over it, but here we see names as a placeholder until we can have power over ourselves. Clever riffing on fairy tale logic is part of what makes Coraline such a sheer delight. Without being preachy, Gaiman sends all the right messages about fear and bravery, family, love etc. The writing also transported me in that magical/scary place and made me feel what Coraline feels. I was scared when she was and I felt courage when she did. All the characters where unique and interesting, helping build the plot and the atmosphere. Neil Gaiman is an equally talented narrator, he really knows how to hit the right tones to make the experience complete. I cannot recommend the audiobook enough. In many ways, this is quite a sad tale as many of the actors who provided their audiences with so many laughs were quite sad and lonely in their personal lives. Definitely a recommended read. NetGalley, Steve Cripwell I listened to the audiobook with the full cast production on the recommendation of a Goodreads friend. This version truly does give a theatrical feel to the story and an elevated listening experience. Thanks, Melissa ~ Bantering Books!Caroline’s character, in both the book and television series, was never featured as prominently as perhaps it should have been. She maintained a steady, consistent, and somewhat stereotyped wife/mother role. I’m pleased that someone saw fit to explore her life in more depth. The Little House books are legendary, so Sarah Miller was very brave to step in that territory with a new perspective -- Caroline's. She nailed it. Now that I also have lived the life of a wife and mother, I loved this book every bit as much as I did the original series. It was clear that Miller did extensive research so she could give this book more depth than the series and make it worthy of adult consumption.
