About this deal

If you’re a Star Wars fan looking for a cool centerpiece for your living room that can double as a wireless speaker, then these are a genuinely compelling, if very niche buy. The Stormtrooper and C-3P0 speakers look amazing and ooze character, which is really all you can ask for from official memorabilia. Now what you get in the box is a base with the Star Wars logo on the front and the Death Star speaker.

The Bluetooth functionality is top-notch, responding to audio commands, letting you take phone calls, and listening to all your favorite audio content. Its battery can last up to 10 hours of continuous use. You can also use it wired to your favorite devices for increased functionality. This completely eliminates them as a genuinely compelling portable speaker set – unlike the stellar UE Boom 2. But, in all fairness, that’s not what these speakers are about. AC Worldwide has taken a lot of care over the physical design because it wants them to act as centerpieces in people’s homes, and in my mind it’s succeeded completely. Looking to take your audio capabilities over to the Dark Side? Award-winning designer Plox is looking to allow any Star Wars fan to instantly transport to a galaxy far-far-away with their Death Star Floating Speaker. This is a floating wireless Bluetooth speaker that is meant to double as a gravity-defying orb replica of the famous Death Star from Star Wars. On the front of the base are a series of button that allow you to change the level of bass, and the volume. For once this is a speaker that actually give you clearly decipherable levels of bass when you press the buttons. To be honest I didn’t need to play with the bass too much but it definitely made a difference and I was impressed. As speakers they don’t match the sound quality of more focused products, like the Sonos 1. But that’s not surprising given their focus on aesthetics and authenticity to the movies. The audio quality is decent and matches some competing speakers in the same price point, like the Ministry of Sound M Plus.

Some have reported quality issues, with the iHome Millennium Falcon Bluetooth speaker stopping working after a few months of operations. It took us a while – we’re talking about 30 minutes – to find it the first time so our advice is to be patient and keep at it. The two speakers ooze character and come with a number of easter egg features that will delight any Star Wars fan while annoying everyone else. The characters’ eyes and mouths light up when you power them up and blink whenever they shout one of their character’s iconic phrases. The random jibber jabber takes place when the speakers are idle, and also occurs when pairing and when their batteries are low, essentially replacing regular Bluetooth speaker cues with their own audio files. It didn’t prove to be annoying during my testing though; I found it more charming than anything else. One key thing you’ll notice right away is that you can play music even as the device charges. This is not standard on many Bluetooth speakers. Thanks to an included LED indicator light, you’ll know when the Death Star is fully charged as the light will turn green. Once you’ve achieved a full battery, you can start to pair with a mobile device or computer. As a Star Wars fan, this is one of those must-have products that I would have bought just to watch it float majestically in mid-air and spin on its axis. The issue isn’t as pronounced as I’ve seen on some competing speakers, but it will be noticeable to audiophiles, who would do better to look at things like the Sonos 1 – though being fair to AC Worldwide that’s not who this product’s being marketed at.
