About this deal

The gamut volume level of 101.6% is good, if a bit lower than the figures supplied by those rivals, so the Lenovo is more realistic and muted – for many people and in many games, that’s a good thing. However, the Alienware now uses Intel’s Core i7-12700H and the Asus deploys the i9-12900H, and both score beyond 9500 points in that multi-core benchmark. The 5800H is not slow, but an Intel Alder Lake laptop or a newer Ryzen chip would all be better choices for content creation and tougher workloads.

The Lenovo Legion 7 doesn’t look that exciting when you haul the machine from the box. Boot the notebook and it comes to life, with a ring of customizable RGB LEDs around the laptop’s base, in the air vents and in the lid’s Legion logo. Lenovo has been a bit of a latecomer to the world of gaming laptops, and the Legion 7 is the firm’s attempt to gain ground against big players like Asus and Alienware.Rise of the Tomb Raider, set to its most demanding settings with ray tracing enabled, scored 99fps at native resolution, while the lowest score I got from Wolfenstein: Youngblood was 105fps and that was with ray tracing on, DLSS off and running maximum detail levels at 2,560 x 1,660. Drop the resolution down to FHD and the frame rate jumps to 141fps. To change the lighting colors and effects featured on the laptop, Lenovo is using Corsair's iCue app. The AMD-powered Lenovo Legion 7 is a top-notch gaming laptop for enthusiasts who want next-generation gaming in a mobile form factor. The RGB-powered laptop screams gaming in every way through its well-thought-out design, from the surrounding lights and keycaps to its well-placed vents and speakers.

Across all of our performance tests, this laptop achieved scores that put it well above almost every entry in our best gaming laptops list. In our 3DMark tests, the Legion 7 scored 52,201 in Night Raid, 23,811 in Fire Strike and 10,709 in Time Spy whereas the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 (the device in our number one spot) only achieved 43,645, 21,211 and 9,333 in each test respectively. Our first test is UL's PCMark 10, which simulates a variety of real-world productivity and office workflows to measure overall system performance and also includes a storage subtest for the primary drive. The Legion 7 Gen 7 finished in the upper end of the graph in the main test, though it didn’t catch the Legion 7i Gen 7. The Legion is available with a beefier Ryzen 9 5900HX CPU, but that chip still can’t match those newer Intel parts and the laptop is more expensive when you make that upgrade – so it’s poorer value when compared to the x15 and Asus. The 3DMark Time Spy results hint that the Legion 7 Gen 7 is off to a strong start. In F1 2021, it came close to the Legion 7i Gen 7 and substantially bested it in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. (Strangely, both Legion models refused to run Rainbow Six Siege; the benchmark test, not the game proper.) It’s no doubt a strong performer. At first, I was surprised by how loud the speakers were. When I began listening to “Omar’s Coming” by Westside Gunn, I noticed how muffled the song was. Then, upon further inspection, I lifted the laptop and realized there were two smaller speakers underneath. Once I lifted it off the surface, Immediately heard the extra “oomph” they provided.

Stay on task. And on target.

We also informally tested the Legion 7 Gen 7 at its native 2,560 by 1,600-pixel native screen resolution, where it produced 87 frames per second (fps) in F1 2021 (Ultra settings, AMD FSR enabled) and 78fps in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (Ultra settings), respective drops of 16% and 32% from the 1080p averages of 104fps and 115fps. FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS, anti-glare, 144Hz, < 3ms response time, 100% Adobe RGB, 500 nits, VESA DisplayHDR 400-certified, Dolby Vision™-enabled. The fans are also well behaved. Though audible while gaming, the noise is ultimately just a lot of air passing through the vents. There is little to no fan noise during general use.

Certain keys have their own hotkey functions when pressing Fn, showing their secondary uses. For instance, the Fn + Q key allows you to change performance presets from Auto, Quiet, and Performance (if connected to power.) There’s also an Fn + R key function that changes the display setting from the standard 165Hz to 60Hz, which comes in handy when trying to conserve power. There are three removable shields surrounding the RAM and storage, two of which can be unscrewed with a similar screwdriver. Once those are off, you will see dual slots for M.2 SSDs on either side, and one already preinstalled (you can configure with two drives when you buy, or add more later). To access the RAM, you can just pull off the shielding with your fingertips. Battery Life on the Lenovo Legion 7The touchpad itself feels smooth to the touch, without any friction when scrolling up and down. There’s little to no residue left over from your touch, and it is an appropriate size in height and width at 4.7 x 3-inches. Audio on the Lenovo Legion 7 For Far Cry New Dawn under ultra presets, the Lenovo Legion 7 hit 91 fps at 1080p and 82 fps at 1600p. Meanwhile, the Alienware x17 hit 94 fps on 1080p and 60 fps in 4K. The Razer Blade hit 93 fps at 1080p and 82 fps in 4K. At 1080p, the Raider had the best performance, tapping out at 99 fps.
