About this deal

The series was developed chiefly by Tom Hanks and Erik Jendresen, who spent months detailing the plot outline and individual episodes. [16] Steven Spielberg served as "the final eye" and used Saving Private Ryan, the film on which he and Hanks had collaborated, to inform the series, although Jendresen served as showrunner. [17] [18] Accounts of Easy Company veterans, such as Donald Malarkey, were incorporated into production to add historic detail. Ambrose attempts to replicate, on a smaller scale, the feats of Lord and Ryan. In Easy Company of the 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne, he has an incredible subject: an elite group of soldiers who – like the mythical platoon of Samuel Fuller’s The Big Red One – find themselves in just about every important operation in the European Theater, from D-Day to VE-Day. I have just had to write about a few of the many absurdities of this book. The leadership quality of this new endeavor also contributes to their commitment. Rather than the stereotypical sergeants more interested in their own comfort and advancement than those of the men in their charge, the recruits instead discover a different sort of officer who mixes their passion for excellence with empathy. These leaders tie their success with that of their enlisted men. Under the command of 1st Lt. Herbert Sobel, the men endure a physical regimen unlike any others. He demands a level of physical endurance that some would term cruel. The men begin to bond as brothers, united by the rigorous challenges of basic training and Sobel’s endless night marches. The training is designed to winnow out the strong from the weak. Jump school makes them face the instinctive fear of hurtling into the unknown from moving airplanes, held up by technology, training, and trust in the chain of command. I would like to make it clear that I make no judgement as to the rights or wrongs of Easy Company, "Ike" "Monty", General Taylor or military tactics etc. I do make a judgement on Stephen E. Ambrose ability as a historian. This is an appalling book. Easily one of the worst history books I have ever read. In fact forget history alone as a subject, this is one of the worst books I have read period. I am genuinely staggered as to how this book is popular. Maybe the TV series? Many relate to the characters portrayed, visualise them? Is that it? The 100 best TV shows of the 21st century". The Guardian. September 16, 2019. Archived from the original on November 1, 2019. Shifty's War: The Authorized Biography of Sergeant Darrell "Shifty" Powers, the Legendary Sharpshooter from the Band of Brothers (Hardcover)

Philip French of The Guardian commented that he had "seen nothing in the cinema this past year that impressed me as much as BBC2's 10-part Band of Brothers, produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, and Ken Loach's The Navigators on Channel 4", and that it was "one of the best films ever made about men in war and superior in most ways to Saving Private Ryan." [51] Matt Seaton, also in The Guardian, wrote that the film's production was "on such a scale that in an ad hoc, inadvertent way it gives one a powerful sense of what really was accomplished during the D-Day invasion - the extraordinary logistical effort of moving men and matériel in vast quantities." [52] This is more than military history the way it should be written: it is military history the way it can be written. Band of Brothers is an absorbing, compelling, and even stunning book. . . . This may be as close as any reader will wish to come to war without actually taking part in it.” The book consists of a foreword, epigraph, and a maps section, followed by 19 chapters. There is an afterword and a brief author's bio after the chapters. It’s the fault of HBO, truly and absolutely. The Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg-produced Band of Brothers miniseries happens to be one of the greatest things to ever appear on a screen. This is not hyperbole, by the way, but an objective fact written in the stars. The theme of the unsung hero weaves throughout the story in the recurring tributes to Herbert Sobel. His tyrannical forced night marches and impulse to humiliate his soldiers reflect his twisted character, and yet his methods somehow serve the men well in the end. Without Sobel’s contributions, the men of Easy Company would not have developed the level of preparedness nor the toughness to withstand the challenges of the battlefield. Sobel is the cautionary tale of the outsider who never learned to love or be loved.

If you want a good summary of E Company's experience in WW2 that also follows the HBO series fairly closely, this is an interesting, not overly tactical read. TCA Awards winners". The surprise was achieved, like most surprise in war, because the defenders were guilty of gross over confident" Naturally, it would be grossly unfair to him to put him down too severely. He seems like a nice, decent man, and well-meaning. His effort in looking up surviving Easy Company men, interviewing them, and collating all that information was and remains invaluable. What is irksome though is that I firmly believe someone else should have actually written this book. Downey, Kevin (October 31, 2001). "The two hit shows TV buyers dissed". Media Life.
