We love our NHS, hang the paedos” — that was a tongue-in-cheek formula sketched out in 2018 by Jeremy Driver, a tweeter who might just be the most influential political philosopher you’ve never heard of. Former Conservative cabinet minister David Willetts criticized the book for being almost entirely about "culture war" issues and lacking serious engagement with arguments about economic pressures. Dominated by the new middle-class graduate elite, many institutions that focus heavily on diversity are not that diverse at all.

Sometimes Goodwin uses an Oxbridge education as a stick to beat people with - see his definition of new elites. In my new book, I refer to these divides as values, voice and virtue, and argue that whichever party gets on the right side of them will dominate British politics in the years ahead. For one, he is right to point out the erosion of significant differences between the two main political parties, Conservative and Labour, which have coalesced around the liberal consensus set up by Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s. By contrast, the “traditional values” displayed by conservatives are presented as almost natural, despite the vast literature showing how notions such as “national identity” or “whiteness” may be constructed in a top-down way that benefits the elite. One influential broad definition, from the American sociologist Shamus Khan: elites are anyone who has “vastly disproportionate control over or access to a resource”. as it remains an enjoyable book to read, and Goodwin continues to be right about many of the trends he identified a number of years ago. This new elite, according to Goodwin, has captured the country’s key economic, political and cultural institutions.
