About this deal

Maybe this is the only print available and the market for such a series so marginal that any investment in cleaning it up would never be recouped. Luke’s illegal activities in establishing a squatter’s ranch allow plenty of opportunity for conflict with the penal colony’s governing body who refuse to recognise his claim to the land. He does an awful lot of yelling into the wide blue yonder, but he does it in a terribly posh accent.

The arrival of an uninvited guest causes complications for Luke because of an association he builds up with Jassy. Amongst its directors are fan-favourite Peter Hammond ( The Avengers ) and the award-winning Peter Weir ( Picnic at Hanging Rock ).

The quality of the film used, then, and its colour was not as good as today's film but that is soon forgotten as the stories unfold. Cast: Oliver Tobias, James Condon, Elizabeth Crosby, Gerard Maguire, Helen Morse, Bettina Kenter, Joseph Furst, Edmund Pegge, Shirley Cameron, Victoria Anoux, Willie Fennell, Alfred Bell, Les Foxcroft, John Ewart. A far cry from the "b00bs and simper"school of "acting" of today, and the stupid "offend nobody" hysteria and trembling. He seems to enjoy the freedom, too much, and does anything he wants - floggings, murder, and incest are all included - but seems to be totally inept at fighting unless it is bullying others.

The incestual overtones are a bit creepy and apparent almost from the word go, but are intitially so brief you wonder if you are imagining them. The recently widowed and retired naval lieutenant James Firbeck takes his family, sons, Samuel and Luke and daughter Jassy to New South Wales to claim a grant of land. Used to like this programme years ago and bought it to see if it was as good as I remembered, I was not disappointed but thought it was a longer series than it actually is. In the early 19th Century, a man takes his children to Australia to start a new life, but finds that the land he was left by a friend has been settled by others.Future Hollywood actor Robert Shaw (The Sting, Jaws) made his small screen debut as ex- pirate Dan Tempest, the leader of a small band of freebooters who roamed the Caribbean Seas in the 1720's on their ship The Sultana. His father and brother appear totally spineless, although the line adopted for the series is that they are fish out of water and good Christians. The diary dates go from Oct 14, 1829 to Dec 2, 1834 so I guess another series was intended as the opening of each episode states 'A settlers diary 1829-1836'. When d'Artagnan and his father are attacked on the way to Paris resulting in the father's death, the young swordsman seeks revenge on the murderer. He displayed a ruthless and decidedly cruel streak and was motivated by just two things – his desire to succeed as a rancher by any means and his quasi-incestuous love for his sister Jassy.

It was co-produced with Trident Television, the then owners of Yorkshire and Tyne Tees Television, and aired in 1976 on Nine Network in Australia and ITV in the United Kingdom. Starring Oliver Tobias, James Condon, Helen Morse and Elizabeth Crosby, and produced by Tony Essex ( Follyfoot ), Luke's Kingdom is an epic adventure series set in Australia during the early nineteenth century. The series starred Oliver Tobias as an Englishman who, in 1829, emigrates to Australia with his father and siblings to settle on a land grant in New South Wales. Little aired since that date, it's a surprisingly lavish affair with a large cast, huge scope, and plenty of production value.Theres a fair bit of poppy eyed hysterical acting in it, and Oliver Tobias certainly had the looks and charisma to have been a much bigger star than he became. A strange world greets the Yorkshire family, one of Red-coats, convicts and a peasantry governed by a wealthy elite. Archive TV fans may also like to know that the series was produced by Tony Essex of 'Follyfoot' fame.
