About this deal

The quality of bits you get with the kit isn’t the greatest. They will probably need replacing before long.

The accessory kit is varied enough for most jobs around the house and the extension bit will come in handy. Most of the models with built-in batteries charge from a standard wall charger, or even in many cases via a micro-USB port. This is convenient if you’re travelling around and also means you can keep using your screwdriver even if you lose the charger supplied. A few still use some form of charging cradle, where the tool slots into place. Key specs – Power: 18V; Speeds: 10; Max speeds: 650rpm; Max torque: 30Nm; Battery: 1,500mAh lithium-ion; Charger: 18Vproprietary; Accessories: 1 bit; Weight: 750g If you’ve got large hands, like me, it’s almost too small to get a good grip on it compared to the Makita DF001DW, for example. The charge time of three to five hours can ruin a workday. Always remember to put it on charge when you’re finished. The grip shape makes handling this cordless screwdriver easy. I like the ergonomic shape and the rubberised bottom lip. Electric screwdrivers fall into three camps – pistol grip screwdrivers that give you more stability and grip, straight-handled screwdrivers that can fit into the tightest spaces, and those that convert from a straight handle to a pistol grip to give you the best of both worlds. Getting the Most out of your Electric Screwdriver Firstly, lithium-ion batteries do not like to be too hot, especially when they are fully charged. So, keep your batteries at a temperature of between 20 and 25 degrees wherever possible. The 5 Nm of torque goes a long way on electric screwdrivers. This one confidently screws into a range of materials.

The ideal accompaniment to a full size cordless drill, you won’t have to keep changing drill bits all the time. Unlike NiCad batteries, lithium-ion batteries do not have a charge memory. This means it’s better for your battery to recharge it after a partial discharge when possible rather than waiting for it to fully discharge each time. Once your power tool begins to lose power it’s best not to force it to continue as this can sometimes trigger a safety circuit that makes it difficult to recharge. Makita quality in a small electric screwdriver. The build quality is excellent and feels like it will last for years of good service. However, the WX240 really comes into its own if you’re working in cramped spaces, or doing fiddly jobs where a larger cordless driver with more of a pistol grip might get in the way. I used both the WX240 and the Bosch IXO to assemble a PC inside a new case, and while the Bosch was fine for removing external case screws, the Worx was a lot more usable inside the case and for getting screws into the motherboard. It charges in under 90 minutes over a USB-C cable, and will happily last for around 35 to 45 minutes of work. For bigger screws on DIY jobs, you might want something with a little more power and torque; but if you need something that feels and works more like a manual screwdriver, this is the one to buy. With one of the largest ranges of power tools in the world, Makita pushes technology with features such as brushless motors, anti-vibration technology and the higher output batteries in the Makita 40V XGT range. This cordless screwdriver is a neat piece of kit though, well-built and powerful, yet compact and light to use. It is powered by a 3.6 Volt 1.5 Ah Lithium-Ion battery that can hold its charge for surprisingly long periods (depending on the workload of course) and charges in around 3 hours. Also, a battery protection circuit protects against over-discharging and over-heating, therefore extending the battery life. I wish this had a speed selector as well as a torque selector. It runs quite slowly, but it’s either on or off, with no variation.

The secret to not stripping a screw is in the downward pressure. The push design means you shouldn’t slip off or cam out a screw. Key specs – Power: 4V; Speeds: 1; Max speeds: 230rpm; Max torque: 3Nm; Battery: 1,500mAh lithium-ion; Charger: Proprietary 4.2V; Accessories: 6 bits, removable screw holder; Weight: 500gThe flexible drive shaft is probably the best accessory you can get for a portable electric screwdriver. It gets into the tightest spots imaginable! Getting a torque adjuster collet on a budget electric screwdriver is great. Learn to use it and you won’t strip a screw head ever again. The plastic case deserves a mention on its own. It gives you somewhere to store the screwdriver when not in use and holds all the bits and accessories tightly. It’s great! The weight of any handheld tool is important, particularly for prolonged use, and electric screwdrivers are no exception. More powerful versions will tend to weigh a little more.

They’ve included a mini ratchet wrench in with the accessories. I think I’ll use this all the time, it’s just really handy. If you’re looking to get some serious work done, the Makita DF001DW has you covered. It can switch between pistol-grip and standard barrel screwdriver modes for different situations, and it feels extremely robust in the hand. Even the micro-USB port in the handle has a cover. A two-way switch at the top of the handle drives screws in or out at a single speed. Some users have had problems with the on-board torque limiter. Even though it’s not designed for anything more than light jobs, a little more grunt at times would be useful. It couldn’t be easier to use. Pushing the screwdriver into the screw to make it rotate feels natural. This one’s great for bigger projects: it’s versatile, it’s got plenty of welly and it comes with an 81-piece set of bits that should cover just about everything you would need. With a respected brand like Makita, you know you’re not getting poor-quality accessories. It’s a little large for some smaller jobs, though, and a little too fierce for jobs that need finesse, such as PC builds or appliance repairs. When you’re up to something major, though, this is a top tool for the job.For improved performance look for a variable speed control function and the number of torque settings that the cordless screwdriver provides. The Posenpro electric screwdriver is easy to grip, and you can choose from two handle positions to suit the task at hand. You might only get 10 driver bits thrown in, but it includes a 3 mm HSS drill bit for those all-important pilot holes.
