About this deal

After that, you're probably thinking "It can't be THAT bad. She must be exaggerating." You'd be right. This book is so much worse.

Muy lindo el libro y el tema que trata sobre las ballenas, bueno el daño hacia el medio ambiente que cometemos los seres humanos. A beautiful story . . . My heart went out to Bear and April and the lost environments of the north. This is a hugely important and moving read, that shows just what toll climate change is taking on the natural world' Lauren James, author of The Quiet at the End of the WorldI admit that I have a major soft spot for orca whales. It might be that they are amazingly empathetic creatures or it might be that I loved Free Willy as a child or a bit of both. But that beside, this is a spectacular and moving book. Sadly however, the ocean and the whales are in grave danger thanks to human misconducts. As Marina says, "the ocean is one the most dangerous place on earth. But it is also one of the most in danger". Besides climate change, Hannah Gold interwoven the issues of ocean's pollutions, whales huntings, whales accidents due to ships and boats collisions, ghost nets entanglement and other major threats perfectly well into the story and how we humans play very important roles in safeguarding the ocean and its inhabitants and how we can make a difference if we cared and work together. An absolutely beautiful story of love, loss, hope and passion told through the eyes of the young, the determined, those who know change must happen. Rio tells his story and shares his pain whilst living with his mum and her mental health issues. But a change must come. So by moving to California to live with his grandmother, Rio learns of the horrifying effects of human activity that is threatening our planet alongside his own bravery to find his own strength to strive for change. Rio takes us on a wonderful adventure to save ‘White Beak’ whilst saving himself from the guilt and heartfelt loss of being away from his mum and his home. I'm a school librarian who is helping the school choose a new book for the KS3 transition class to read in the upcoming academic year. This book is one of our five choices. Author Guy Bass introduces SCRAP, about one robot who tried to protect the humans on his planet against an army of robots. Now the humans need his...

The New Oxford American Dictionary defines “Empathic” as “showing the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” This book is about a boy who loves whales. His mother turns I'll do he has to stay with his grandma. While he is at his grandma's house he learns about a whale called the white beak. One day the white beak traps her tail, can this boy help white beak before it's to late? I particularly love the turquoises and blues on the front cover. From the inside illustrations, I actually think he has surpassed his own high standards! My favourites are obviously the one of Rio and White Beak in the water together but also the one of the dolphins bow-surfing next to the boat. When I saw that one, I actually gasped! The dolphins were so life-like. It really did fill me with joy and wonder to see them all. Reading about the unique interactions the writer collected over years …not only his own interactions but the interactions and experience of the many individuals from scientists, observers, residents, volunteers, etc….who engaged with Luna, opened my eyes and perception to the reality that communication is more than just words spoken. That what we interpret as “human” intelligence that puts us above all other living creatures is actually “human” ignorance. We fail to recognize that communication is synonymous to connection, and our connection to the world around us is limited bc we cannot comprehend any other sense of communication other than speech. Timna, 14-year-old daughter of Noah, tells what really happened to her family during the endless days and nights in the Ark, while the world all around them turned to water.

In Hannah Gold's latest masterpiece, we meet Rio - a boy adrift in life. His mother, we infer, is struggling with her mental health and Rio is desperately trying to manage being her carer but the reality is, he's simply treading water. Rio finds himself, reluctantly, in California, miles away from London and worlds away from home. His grandma offers her love and understanding but Rio feels no connection, only resentment. The only calm that Rio can find is in the ocean and it is here that he experiences a sense of peace and connection. I'm not one of those authors who approaches research from a particularly scientific point of view, but what I do like to do is immerse myself in the setting of the book. So, for The Last Bear, that meant reading lots about Bear Island, watching documentaries on the Arctic and traveling to Norway to experience the midnight sun first-hand. Kudos to the author, Hannah Gold for her successfully weaving a beautiful, inspiring and eye-opening story by blending extremely well two important issues, that are mental health illness and ocean conservations through this story.

Let's start like this. If the stars went from -5 to 5, I would give it -10. If the only thing keeping me from going to hell was a good rating and review of this book, I would suffer eternal torment. If God himself told me this was the best book in the world, I would laugh at him. There is nothing good about it. As Rio grows to love the whales, he discovers that his mother loved them, too. He's suddenly sure that if he can somehow find a way to connect her with these gentle giants - and especially with a particular whale named White Beak - she will get better and come to join him in California. But White Beak is missing--and Rio must embark on a desperate journey across the dangerous ocean to find her. From a structural point of view, there had to be a reason why Rio would fly off to America all by himself, but from an emotional point of view, the reason why I chose mental health as one of the major themes of The Lost Whale is because it's something very close to my heart.
