This drum set was so enjoyable to play. And as you would expect from DW, the standard of the build is virtually flawless. This miniature drum set sounded astonishingly good, and it makes the perfect travel companion or space-saving kit. Sonor’s Jungle kits set the quintessential blueprint for a lot of micro/compact setups in the ‘90s. Taking aim squarely at the growing trend for drummers wanting to emulate the higher-pitched sampled sounds heard in drum’n’bass and hip-hop, the Jungle’s popularity became something of a catch-all eponym for kits of this size. Fast forward to today, though, and the configuration is called ‘Safari’ and is available as part of Sonor’s AQ2 series.
This compact kit looks and sounds fantastic, with a real old school charm thanks to its distinctive sizes, vintage-inspired hardware, and particularly eye-catching finishes with matching wood bass drum hoops. The shells are made of poplar, which was (and still is) frequently used as the middle ply in classic/vintage drums from Ludwig and Gretsch. As well as its sonic qualities, poplar is known for being lightweight, which adds to the efficiency of a small setup like this. The Tama Club Jam is an impressive mini drum set that comes in at a very modest price point. Featuring drum shells made from lively Poplar/Mersawa wood, this retro-inspired compact kit produces killer tones despite its small size. The hardwood drum shells are durable and well-constructed, with precisely cut bearing edges too. It’s also worth noting that visually this mini drum set looks great, too! It’s got a sparkle wrap that looks attractive. When you have smaller shells, the drums will produce higher pitches tones. If you’re looking for a compact kit that provides deep and warm tones, getting the smallest shell sizes possible won’t be a good idea.
