To open just do the opposite and turn the dial to the open lock position and the lid will easily lift off. I've had them for several years and they still work great, dishwasher safe and still work perfectly despite fairly frequent use. When I was trying them out they felt cheap; it's hard to explain, but just unnecesarily bulk for the mechanism.
