About this deal

I am Sean Growley and I have won six Castles of Burgundy tourneys at Strategicon, a local convention. With these tips, you might be the next Sean Growley. Yay? My specialty is in 4 player games so that is what most of the article will concentrate on. I will give tips on 3 player and 2 player games at the end. The strategy changes somewhat with each player count. My gameplay overview will be brief, if you’ve never played Castles of Burgundy, you should, it’s one of the classics. You roll two dice and use these dice for various actions. Your goal is to build your Duchy using different tiles. Your Duchy is a map filled with hexes that you can build various buildings on. You can use your dice to buy buildings from the shared pool, use them to place tiles on your board. You can even use them to sell goods you acquire or buy workers that enable you to alter your dice rolls and help you fill your Duchy even further. The cover art is perfectly reminiscent of medieval France and definitely has that familiar Euro game feel about it. The artwork within the game may be simplistic but it’s certainly vibrant – every time I photograph my plays it just pops.

Building (beige): Whenever a player adds a building tile to his estate (which can occur up to 12 times), then he immediately gets to make a single use of that building's advantage. One more player board, labelled number 2 in 2019 edition, and available in 4 copies so that it can be used for beginner setup. This board is available in both 1st edition and 2019 edition options of this implementation. The board that was labelled number 2 in first edition was given number 10 in 2019 edition, so it has number 10 in this online implementation, regardless of the chosen edition option. Example: Benno adds the topmost 4-cow tile to his estate. He receives 4 + 3 = 7 victory points for it. Should he add another 4-cow tile to this pasture later on, then he would receive 4 + 4 + 3 = 11 victory points for it. Let’s talk about the design and art style first. The board has been redesigned, has have a lot of components. They are brighter, more detailed while but skill keep that old-school art style. It does look a lot more up to date but looking at the boards next to each other, the new one does look a little busier. The different goods actually have different items on them now, instead of them having the same bland artwork on. This is a welcomed change. The buildings look a lot more detailed and one thing I really appreciated is that the new artwork for the buildings have actually been designed to help you remember what they do. There is a clue in each piece of art that lets you know it's function.

Points as shown on the yellow knowledge tiles. These points will vary dependent on which knowledge tiles a player has in their estate. For example some knowledge tiles are worth four points for each building of a specific type a player has in their estate. Another tile awards two points for each bonus tile claimed. These tiles do not have an immediate effect when played. There are only ever three spaces for mines on a player’s board. At the end of each phase a player will receive one silverling for each mine in his estate. Beige building tiles

System Requirements

The tile should be placed in the upper right hand corner, next to the used die storage. When a player reaches 200 victory points, then he flips his tile over. Action Sell goods

Note: Rolling simultaneously allows those players whose turns come later to start planning their turns ahead of time.Ship (blue): Whenever a player adds a ship tile to his estate (which can occur up to 6 times), then two things happen immediately: exactly one Silverling from the supply, regardless of how many tiles he just sold (= turned face-down), as well as Note: the implementation on BGA doesn't allow to buy a tile at any moment, because it would not be useful. You can do it only when you just placed a castle or a city hall. The die chosen to carry out this action indicates which goods type (= colour) may be sold. All corresponding goods tiles in the player's goods storage are piled, face-down, onto the goods storage space on the player's board intended for this purpose. For doing this, the player receives: Larsen, Luke (June 26, 2015). "The 10 Essential Gateway Boardgames for Converting Non-Gamers". Paste Magazine . Retrieved April 24, 2017.
