About this deal

Let’s not beat around the bush here: the 20th Anniversary Edition of Nevermind was a gigantic piece of shit. I hear the artefacts others have mentioned. Pathetic work from a major label but not spoiling my enjoyment thank goodness. Paradoxically playing the big stadiums meant tighter controls on volume than in some scuzzy club in a red light district. This blew my mind. After the embarrassing debacle that was the Nevermind re-release, I expected nothing but the worst from this. I certainly didn’t expect them to go above and beyond the call of duty and give us not one, but two amazing editions of this legendary album. Both are a bit pricey (especially the Super Deluxe edition), but if a high cost is what it takes for a quality product that treats the source material with respect, then so be it. Rad shades Kurt

All of it comes this a wonderfully-designed box that houses a great book full of interesting notes, essays and pictures. The discs are even enclosed in such a way that the chances of them spilling out and getting all scratched up are minimal. It really feels like they thought of everything with this one, about the only thing this box set is missing is vinyl. Available exclusively at online stores at uDiscovermusic.com and SoundofVinyl.com and limited to 3000 units worldwide, fans who buy either Super Deluxe Edition will receive a Nirvana acrylic stand to display their angel-on-acrylic panel included in both boxset configurations.I've been enjoying this album for thirty years now,and never felt the impulse to go public and share the experience of listening to this particular pressing. So why now? First off to critically review this album after 20 years would be completely pointless and why would you care what I think about the songs on here? If you are reading this you are interested in the content at this point and not if it's good, because I am going to assume that since you are reading this you think this album is good as well.

Having said this, the inclusion of Albini's original mixes is welcome, and I definitely prefer his versions over scott litt's ones (Including that wonderfully violent effect on the guitar solo of Heart-Shaped Box!). To celebrate/cash-in on the 20th anniversary of In Utero, Universal made four different versions of the album available. For the purposes of this review, I will only be focusing on the Super Deluxe 3CD + DVD box set and the 3LP Special Edition versions. Selected items are only available for delivery via the Royal Mail 48® service and other items are available for delivery using this service for a charge.

Release

What you get here is a really crisp and clear sounding version of the CD. The mix is exactly the same as the 1993 original, which isn't bad. However, to me the point of DVD, or Blu-Ray audio is the separation of the individual instruments and how they all relate to each other as a whole. Sadly, with this you get exactly what you got in 1993, only slightly better. This sounds no better than the ORG vinyl reissue from 2009, which up to this point was the best sounding version of this album in my opinion. If you have that, you do not really need this unless you are a completist. Well, from the day of its initial release there has been quite a variety of alternate takes for the In Utero lover to choose from;and since my predecessors have so eloquently and proficiently commented on most of them I need not dwell on these.Let it suffice to say that I had my share of A/Bs and comperative sessions, but gradually gave in to the notion that this Special Edition may well be second to none for the foreseeable future. Im Grunde aber bleibt es sehr ambivalent: Leute bearbeiten etwas, das sie in ihren eigenen Zwanzigern geschaffen haben, nachträglich. Die Ohren sind sicher nicht mehr die selben. Now I can only hope that Universal will re-visit the Nevermind boxset in a few years and come out with a discounted “We’re sorry about that last one, here’s a new version by the guys who did the In Utero box set” edition, and then we’ll all be set. Some of this live stuff has made me positively reassess my opinion of this tour or at least some parts of it.

Mir hat "In Utero" von Anfang an gefallen. Mit der ersten Single "Heart-Shaped Box" konnte ich wenig anfangen, wusste aber nie so recht warum. Doch dazu gleich mehr. My initial reaction was whoa! Nothing what I expected, but Kurts plan was to alienate people who gravitated towards the band because of Nevermind. To me, it pulls elements of the 3 prior releases.

On The Go

For 30 years we’ve really only had bootlegs, tv shows and a few indifferent excerpts on the muddy banks live album. It feels like this is the first proper look at the tour. Once upon a time I would have bought one but I’ve been burned by shoddy products so I nearly missed hearing this. Really glad to have it. In Utero went on to mark Nirvana ’s first #1 debut on the Billboard 200 and has since been certified 6x platinum in the United States.
