Many of the victories fought to bring Unification to Old Earth were marred by the sight of blood-smeared angels stalking the fallen and wounded champions of the enemy across fields choked with corpses, though few among their detractors realised the purpose of this grim fixation. For this too was part of the Emperor's grand design, for through the genetic augmentations that had transformed them, the IX th Legion were capable of stealing their enemy's power from them, genetically absorbing their knowledge and skill and making them their own through the use of their Omophagea implants. All that was required was the consumption of the foe's bodily tissues. The story follows a group of Space Marines of the Blood Angels chapter. Stranded on a star system during the aftermath of the Great Rift, a squad of Blood Angels descend upon a war-torn planet in search of their captain, where they discover that the inhabitants are not who they appear to be.

As the warriors of the Death Company faced their inevitable destruction, a beam of light thrust down from the scoured skies of Tartoros, pure and constant in its glory. As the squad’s Techmarine and a devoted adherent to both the Blood Angels creed and the teachings of Mars, Hadrael harbours a burning reverence for machine and Space Marine alike. He is loyal and efficient, much like the machine spirits he entreats with, and when push comes to shove he’s a fearsome warrior in his own right. Unbeknownst to many, he was an adept poet with a distinct artistic flourish before his journey to Mars for his Techmarine training.

Magos Castia-Theta-9 is a techpriest of the Adeptus Mechanicus, and as a standard practice has replaced most of her biological body parts with mechanical replacements. She notably has a cybernetic laser eye.Instead, the Lamenters employ strike forces which are created as needed from across all the units of the Chapter, giving them a high degree of flexibility in shaping their forces to meet operational needs. Chapter recruitment was also carried out on a practical basis, with likely Aspirants culled from Feudal Worlds and far-flung Imperial colonies from wherever the Chapter fleet's roving course took it. The most famous example of which being the figure thought to have served as the IX th Legion's first and only master, other than Sanguinius himself. Known to history as Ishidur Ossuros, this warrior is commonly held to have commanded the IX th from Unity to the discovery of Baal in 843.M30, yet a closer examination of the records shows that name died numerous times, only to be replaced by another. It’s worth noting that those who perform Heroic Interventions can now be targeted in the ensuing Fight phase, but can an intervention truly be said to be heroic if there isn’t a little danger? As a mark of honour as well as practicality, it also became accepted that recruits took the names of those whose skills they absorbed, and lieutenants would assume the names of their captains. Such was the resemblance of each member of the IX th to their flawless brothers that most outsiders failed to notice this subtle brand of immortality.Heavy weapons are amongst the biggest guns on the battlefield, but they require bracing to fire at full effect and are unwieldy to bring to bear at close quarters. The Lamenters remain at their heart a Blood Angels Successor Chapter, heir to the glorious and unique martial traditions and brutally effective art of war practiced by the Sons of Sanguinius. They adhere to the basic tenets of the Codex Astartes with a notional strength of 10 companies each comprising 100 Astartes, with the usual division of one Veteran Company, one Scout Company, 4 Battle Companies, 1 Tactical Reserve, 1 Assault Reserve and 1 Devastator Reserve Company. The Blood Angels are the purest exemplars of what it means to be the Emperor’s Angels of Death. Upon wings of fire they descend into battle and tear the beating heart from those who would dare oppose the will of the Master of Mankind. Though noble and regal in appearance, having inherited elements of their Primarch’s beatific visage, they are fierce and terrible to behold once the battle fury is upon them, for a darkness lies within the heart of each of Sanguinius’ sons… In the years before Sanguinius' return, no few of the other primarchs expressed a distaste with the practises of the IX th Legion, though they could not dispute their success on the battlefield. Such was the legacy of mistrust and barbarism that the IX th carried with them, one pressed upon them by the brutal necessity of their calling.
