About this deal

Gabbro is a coarse-grained mixture of highly calcic plagioclase and the dark iron-magnesium minerals olivine and/or pyroxene (augite). Different blends in the basic gabbroid mix have their own special names, and troctolite is the one in which olivine dominates the dark minerals. (The pyroxene-dominated gabbroids are either true gabbro or norite, depending on whether the pyroxene is clino- or orthopyroxene.) The gray-white bands are plagioclase with isolated dark-green olivine crystals. The darker bands are mostly olivine with a little pyroxene and magnetite. Around the edges, the olivine has weathered to a dull orange-brown color. Grande Coupure extinction. Start of widespread Antarctic glaciation. [85] Rapid evolution and diversification of fauna, especially mammals (e.g. first macropods and seals). Major evolution and dispersal of modern types of flowering plants. Cimolestans, miacoids and condylarths go extinct. First neocetes (modern, fully aquatic whales) appear.

Old pegmatite (late-magmatic dyke formed by aggressive and highly mobile residual melts of a magma chamber)

Stabilization of most modern cratons; possible mantle overturn event. Insell Orogeny, 2,650±150Ma. Abitibi greenstone belt in present-day Ontario and Quebec begins to form, stabilises by 2,600Ma. First uncontroversial supercontinent, Kenorland, and first terrestrial prokaryotes.
