About this deal

Elsie goes to visit her, overjoyed, and soon they come home, but to a new flat, as Elsie's mother let the last one go. Luckily, she and Nan are very close; Elsie just wishes she was allowed a cat to keep her company sometimes.

I would of enjoyed it alot more when I was ten, but found it on my book shelf and thought I'd give it a read before handing it on. He has won numerous awards for his picture books, including the Sheffield Children's Book Award and the 2001 Children's Book Award.Although Elsie eventually has to leave the hospital when she recovers, her mother is still away in Canada with her boss, Mr Perkins, so Elsie ends up going into a childrens' home again, although it is, fortunately, nowhere near as dreadful an experience for her as the last one. For me, however, the pages just whizzed by and I didn't find a single bit boring - of course I wouldn't, it's Jacqueline Wilson I'm talking about! Just the fact she was always putting her own needs and her boyfriends and jobs before Elsie was infuriating to see, and I just wish this could have been addressed more!

In the end (in the epilogue), Elsie and Nan recover, and they go home to their new flat (because Elsie's mother let the other one go), and Elsie's mother goes back into show business. Her Mum comes to look after her but when Elsie gets ill, she is taken away from everything she ever knew.It was VERY intresting as both the main character and her nan both got an illness but Elsie (the main character) got the illness in her knee so she was limping however her nan got it into her lungs but thankfully got better. On the day Elsie had gone into hospital, Sheila had secured a new job (losing her old one up north because she had to stay and look after Elsie until she caught TB), this time as a secretary. Sairaala on tyly, lämmin, valtataisteluja ja monipuolisia ihmissuhteita täynnä oleva paikka, jossa hoitajat ja eri-ikäiset lapset elävät pakotettuina pienenpientä elämää maailman pyöriessä ympärillä. She has also won numerous awards including the Guardian Children's Fiction Award for The Illustrated Mum; the Smarties Prize, the Sheffield Children's Book Award and the Children's Book Award for Double Act; The Young Telegraph/Fully Booked Award in 1995 for The Bed and Breakfast Star; and the 2002 Blue Peter People's Choice Award for The Story of Tracy Beaker.

I am so glad there was an afterword in the book of what happened later in Elsie’s life, of how she got to live with her Nan again. I indulged in some old favourites that had long been given away, and then decided to pick up some newer ones which sounded interesting.Being a major cat lover myself as well, I felt I could particularly relate to Elsie in a meaningful way, having also found cats to be most important and loyalest companions, and the fact that Elsie was a fellow Cat lover alone was enough for me to love her! Our main character, Elsie Kettle lives with her Nan as her Mum is constantly away working on the stage. As a teenager she started work for a magazine publishing company and then went on to work as a journalist on Jackie magazine (which she was told was named after her! Confined to bed for months on end, Elsie finds it very hard to adapt to the hospital’s strict regime.

Anyone looking for splendid stories for children aged between 8-13 should investigate The Illustrated Mum, Lola Rose, The Story of Tracy Beaker, Midnight and Queenie. One of the things I liked most about 'Queenie' when I was younger is the detailed description, particularly the stories Elsie tells to the other children in hospital, based on Enid Blyton's Faraway Tree. I enjoyed this book so much, it was such a lovely, heartwarming and heartbreaking read, that I found myself really absorbed in, eager to find out what would happen next in each chapter, being an ultimately moving, gripping read, which is the best kind of read you can have!Jacqueline is one of the nation’s favourite authors, and her books are loved and cherished by young readers not only in the UK but all over the world. it was a quick and fun, easy read, very enjoyable for 8-12 year olds and it was easy to get gripped with the whole story and relate to how she was feeling. Nan is a kind, warm woman, and is the mother of Sheila, the wife of Mr Kettle and the grandmother of Elsie. She took a turn for the worse after Elsie had been in hospital for a while, even leading to her lung being collapsed. Elsie has a limp and it is found out she has bovine tuberculosis which comes from milk; however, Elsie, her Nan and her Mum think that Elsie got the germs from Nan, which distresses Elsie and her Nan terribly.
