About this deal

Atmospheric and suspenseful, The Colour Storm is an intoxicating story of art and ambition, love and obsession in Renaissance Venice . . . In the documentary, she said that she conducted the original blue-eyes, brown-eyes experiment to make a positive change. In 2001, she was still trying to make a change. You can contribute to that positive change by watching the documentary. It is quite powerful to watch. At points, you are likely to feel uncomfortable. In the most uncomfortable moments, Elliott reminds the students of violent acts caused by racism or homophobia. Jane Elliot Quotes This summary is what pulled me into the book. I have no read many fiction books set during the Renaissance and certainly none set in the art world. I thought that these things would make this book a great fit for me. However, it wasn’t. I had a really difficult time forming any kind of connection with both the plot and the characters. I felt a times that the plot wasn’t fleshed out as well as it should have been. There were times that it felt bulky and other times were the flow was great. This unevenness pulled me out of the story. It also made for a difficult read at times. I thought that there were many times were the plot did not feel like it was moving as it should. I would have liked to have a little bit more depth as well. To this day, at the age of 86, Jane Elliott continues this work. She has made statements about the increase in hate crimes and racism in recent years. The Blue Eyes Brown Eyes exercise continues to be relevant. The idea of white privilege is closely tied to Elliott’s initial question to her students. Did they know what it was like to be discriminated against?

The plot was great, and the twists, when they come, add rather than detract. This book gets a whole extra star for the smoothness of the plotting. But the framing device is absolutely one of the the worst thought through add-ons I've ever read. Enter the world of Renaissance Venice, where the competition for fame and fortune can mean life or death...Impress him, and Zorzo could acquire the most coveted colour in the world - and write his name in history. Little is known about the historic Giorgione, but Dibben takes the few facts known to us, and the handful of paintings ascribed to him, to weave a tale of artistry, courage and fate. The Zorzo of The Colour Storm is both sensitive (in his concern for Sybille and for his apprentices) and enthused by his work. Colour—and finding the exact pigments to use—is a constant preoccupation, yet it is equally important for him to capture the essence of the landscape and the people who inhabit it. When he hears about a new colour being brought to Venice, he wants it – and secures a commission to paint the merchant’s wife’s portrait. When Elliott conducted the exercise the next year, she added something extra to collect data. She gave all of the students simple spelling and math tests two weeks before the exercise, on the days of the exercise, and after the exercise. Choose your lighting preferences. That same year, Elliott was invited to the White House Conference on Children and Youth to conduct an exercise on adult educators. Lasting Impact of Blue Eyes Brown Eyes Experiment The next day, Elliott reversed the roles. The brown-eyed children could take off their armbands and give them to the blue-eyed children, who were now taught that they were “inferior” to the brown-eyed children. And the exercise continued in a similar fashion to how it was executed the day before. It is rare to come across a book with such an aptly chosen title. The year is 1510 and Damian Dibben takes us to the shimmering city of Venice where a young painter by the name Giorgione (or Zorzo for his friends) straggles to keep his studio afloat. A possibility of a large commission is on the horizon, which would be the most positive news, if not for the fact that the other candidates for the assignment include names like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci… And also, whoever wins that commission, might be able to lay his hands on a mineral that produces a colour that is said to be the most magnificent of them all, and is likely to obtain an undying fame for whoever should use it…In 1968, schoolteacher Jane Elliott decided to divide her classroom into students with blue eyes and students with brown eyes. The experiment, known as Blue Eyes Brown Eyes experiment, is regarded as an eye-opening way for children to learn about racism and discrimination. What Was the Purpose of the Blue Eyes Brown Eyes Experiment? Red Warning: Dangerous weather is expected and, if you haven’t already done so, you should take action now to keep yourself and others safe from the impact of the severe weather. It is very likely that there will be a risk to life, with substantial disruption to travel, energy supplies and possibly widespread damage to property and infrastructure. You should avoid travelling, where possible, and follow the advice of the emergency services and local authorities. Zorzo is an interesting character, I like how passionate he is for his art and how far he is willing to go to reach his goals. However, we are shown his weaknesses which often betray him and gets him into trouble at times. He is a complex character, brought to life with monologues which at time feel almost Shakespearean in their manner and tone. What should I do – this section links to advice and guidance from our partners on how to stay safe in severe weather The first thing that Jane Elliott did was divide the children into groups: those with blue eyes and those with brown eyes. This was intentional. “One of the ways Hitler decided who went into the gas chamber was eye color,” Elliott said in a later speech. “If you had a good German name, but you had brown eyes, they threw you into the gas chamber because they thought you might be a Jewish person who was trying to pass. They killed hundreds of thousands of people based on eye color alone, that’s the reason I used eye color for my determining factor that day.” How Did The Experiment Work?

Yellow Warning: Yellow warnings can be issued for a range of weather situations. Many are issued when it is likely that the weather will cause some low level impacts, including some disruption to travel in a few places. Many people may be able to continue with their daily routine, but there will be some that will be directly impacted and so it is important to assess if you could be affected. Other yellow warnings are issued when the weather could bring much more severe impacts to the majority of people but the certainty of those impacts occurring is much lower. It is important to read the content of yellow warnings to determine which weather situation is being covered by the yellow warning.

Winning a commission to paint a portrait of the man's wife, Sybille, Zorzo thinks he has found a way into the merchant's favour. Instead he finds himself caught up in a conspiracy that stretches across Europe and a marriage coming apart inside one of the city's most illustrious palazzos. The story is poetic and tragic, with a great twist. My only gripe would be the slow pacing, there was a lot of build up at the beginning and that could have been shortened and my interest held further.
