The remote control buttons are a bit "overloaded" with "M" indicating gain mode of the headphone output rather than being "mute." But you get used to it. Volume range on high/low gainThe volume range isn't super wide and they stay pretty conservative which means most headphones will get in the higher 60-90 range on high gain. Using my sensitive iems, the lowest volume I would use for maybe sleep didn’t happen till 22 on low gain and 15 on high gain. My aeon 2 noire, which is my current hardest to drive full size can, didn’t even produce volume on low gain till 25 on low gain and 18 on high gain. I almost maxed out the Aeon 2 on low gain. I would prefer a higher range of volume but the tradeoff was that I got no floor noise from high gain on anything I used with the EX5. While it is approaching shrillness with brighter song choices, its ability to sift through top-end microdetails enables it to not sound grainy as an upside.

The DX5 is an improved version of the EX5, a DAC and headphone amplifier combo benefiting from both an exceptional conception and a brand new modern design. Using the included remote control, the menu options can be accessed. One of these menu options is the output mode, which can be changed from O-H, O-1 to O-3. These are different outputs that will either use the EX5 as a headphone amplifier or have different combinations of pre-outs, which include single-ended only, XLR only, or both. Separately, since the unit already has an integrated power supply, only a standard IEC cable is stored to the right. Sound quality is quite close to the wired connection, there is a loss in technicalities and refinement plus a touch of edginess to the sound but still very good.

Technicalities are strong and up with the best of the category, the DX5 is offering high conversion fidelity, great transparency, crystalline clarity, excellent extension at both ends of the spectrum, it is detailed and resolving but without sounding analytical.

With a built-in power supply, the first thing you’ll notice is the switch located at the rear. Turning it on, the screen will flash Topping’s logo followed by the input mode and sample rate before displaying the default screen for volume control. Thanks to Shenzhen Audio for hooking me up with a review unit. While I always appreciate stuff being sent in to test and review, It never affects the rating of my review. The unit is considerably more sleek and beautiful with rounder edges and a shorter profile, I much prefer it to the EX5, this is surely a design advancement for Topping. The DX5 is bundled with the remote control, a Bluetooth antenna, a USB cable, a mains cable and a 6.35mm to 3.5mm adapter plus a user manual. My listening sessions with the EX5 and the LCD-X ended up making me feel that the more closed-in nature of the headphone didn’t complement the EX5’s already less expansive soundscape.Tonality is also similar between the 2 devices, where they both have an upper midrange and lower treble recession. Doubling down on this quality ended up creating an even drier overall midrange presentation. Various headphones were used like the Focal Clear Mg, Sennheiser HD660S and HiFiMan Arya V3 among others plus a couple of IEMs. With top tier technicalities and a deeply musical character, the DX5 is the perfect all-in-one solution at a very competitive price although there is still room for improvement at the headphone amplifier section.
