Framed by a metalized, bi-color GMT bezel, the orange dial features bold luminous hands and markers, and a magnified date calendar, as well as a large GMT hand for instant visibility. Lumibrite phosphorus-filled hands and indices accompany the dials, which come in glossy black, matte blue, and vibrant orange ground colors. This hand, done in black or red, indicates the second time zone, making this a first-ever GMT watch in the Seiko 5 Sports lineage. Perhaps a vain detail, I’ve yet to encounter a watch collector who isn’t mesmerized by the mechanical intricacies of their watches. And in this vein, a steel bracelet is some sort of a must for me, as I don’t really enjoy rubber straps.

Now, in June 2022, Seiko presents the first major mechanical evolution into the 5 Sports collection, and it’s this new GMT watch. The front of the sporty case features scratch-resistant Hardlex crystal with a magnifier on it and a bidirectional rotating bezel with a 24-hour insert. Seiko arrived in watchmaking with the mindset to create a special segment targeted towards the Japanese watchmaking industry.Still, I’m not sure taking a 5K (or more) euros watch on a hiking trip or for a fishing afternoon on a speed boat seems like the right option. The collection is also home to a GMT variant with a long-central hand depicting the second time zone. A dedicated sports watch from Seiko, the 5 Sports collection is equipped with a robust case and is offered in various series. The movement that brings models to life, Caliber 4R34, is based on the brand's new generation entry-level movement family 4R platform. Beyond these case sides, the rest of the case is almost archetypical for Seiko sports watches, with a tall, heavily knurled rotating bezel, short rounded brushed lugs, and a sizeable 4 o’clock crown with flowing asymmetrical guards. Yet, with the SKX007 (and its siblings) being some of the most acclaimed and respected models of the Japanese brand, Seiko decided to give it (sort of) a successor, in the name of the Seiko 5 Sports Collection.Worst characteristic of watch: Mineral crystal bezel insert can cause legibility issues at certain angles, imprecise bracelet finishing with flimsy clasp. Introduced in 1968, it has always stood for honest, reliable watchmaking with an active lifestyle in mind. And the result of this two-tone insert with the Hardlex surface is pretty cool… From certain angles, it looks almost entirely black.But here again, there’s an undeniable jump in quality compared to the SKX, whether visually or on the wrist. Even if you plan a recreational dive, the deepest you’ll go will probably be 20/30 metres below the surface. With the SKX Sports Style, the timepieces feature timepieces that are more inclined towards being dress watches. Even though looking out the window of my office today in France the weather isn’t the most engaging, it seems that summer is around the corner.
