About this deal

A cliffhanger at the end of each chapter persuaded me to read on each time. A truly magical book, I was gripped by every single word. Michelle's path to becoming a writer was inspired by stories told by her sisters as she was growing up, one of which was so vivid it prompted her to dig in the garden looking for evidence of a dead fairy. (She didn't find anything.) Since becoming a published author she still does strange things like asking people to shut her in the boots of their cars – all in the name of research, of course – like Alice.

This is a very well-written book, particularly the way in which Michelle Harrison describes the feelings and emotions of the three sisters - there is a fantastic atmosphere to the book. I haven’t read a book like it.Betty didn’t respond, fighting to appear calm for her sister’s sake. Perhaps Granny hadn’t been too cautious. Perhaps she was right to be afraid ...

Really, for how short it was... it made me really happy, u know? Cute, sweet, warm and cozy... that's what i would say to describe this game. Three determined sisters are forbidden to leave their home. The youngest, Charlie, is unpredictable, caring and kind. Betty, the middle sister, is adventurous and daring. Fliss is thoughtful and kind. A Pinch of Magic is about three sisters determined to break a family curse. A sea of emotions awaits you. There is humour; there is grief; you will laugh and be afraid - it’s a non-stop rollercoaster. Will the girls ever be able to venture beyond the Sorrow Isles to the places they dream of? A Pinch of Magic is a brilliantly crafted story from author Michelle Harrison, which we shared in our book club. The group really enjoyed the storytelling of Abi Elphinstone, Catherine Fisher, Katherine Rundell and Piers Torday, and if you like those authors, too, then you’ll be bowled over by this book. Which of the three sisters, Fliss, Betty or Charlie, is most like you? Probably Charlie. I have a soft spot for animals and I’m usually thinking about my tummy, too! But there’s also a hint of Fliss. I’m a dreamer like her, and not very brave. I don’t have much in common with Betty except perhaps her nose for a mystery to be solved.

Who were your favourite writers as a child? Controversial choice nowadays, but the author who made me a reader was Enid Blyton. I adored the Famous Five books, as well as the Malory Towers and St. Clare’s series and read them all over and over again. I loved the idea of children going off on their own and having adventures. I also enjoyed the Gobbolino stories by Ursula Moray Williams, and the humour and darkness of Roald Dahl. Later on it was the Point Horror books and then Christopher Pike who kept me reading throughout my teenage years. I loved being scared, and these were the stories that inspired me to start writing my own. We’re off now, Granny,” she said, thankful her face was hidden. She had been planning this evening for weeks, feeling only excitement, but now that it had come to carrying it out, she couldn’t quite believe her own disobedience. She hoped her grandmother would put the tremor in her voice down to excitement, and not to the nerves that were buzzing inside her like marsh midges.

Books about journeys are my favourite sort of book - but A Pinch of Magic is different, in that the sisters want to leave the islands for an adventure of their own, but they are trapped by a curse. Following the publication of the latest book in the series, A Storm of Sisters, we spoke to Michelle about her enchanting stories and the books she loves.
