When Prandelli left in the summer of 2000, he was replaced by Attilio Perotti, a reserved journeyman coach in his fifties who had managed Verona to promotion in the 1995-96 season. Despite that previous success with the club, Perotti had never coached in Serie A before and struggled to inspire his players.

During the nineties he wrote two, personal non-fiction accounts of life in northern Italy, Italian Neighbours and An Italian Education, books that won acclaim and popularity for their anthropological wryness. These were complemented in 2002 by A Season with Verona, a grand overview of Italian life as seen through the business and passion of football, and Italian Ways, on and off the rails from Milan to Palermo.

A Season with Verona, the cult classic by Tim Parks, charted the highs and lows of one memorable season spent following Hellas Verona. At that time, they were an unfashionable provincial team, struggling for survival in the Italian top-flight. Of course, it’s far more than just a story about football, delving deep into the very essence of being a fan, while seamlessly exploring various aspects of Italian history, politics, culture and society. At the end of the 2001 season, Perotti passed to southern rivals Bari, where he spent two unremarkable seasons, followed by short spells at Empoli, Genoa and Livorno. After a career spanning five decades, Perotti’s days as a coach finally grounded to a halt in 2014. His record with Verona, promotion to Serie A in 1996, and dramatic salvation in 2001 ensure his place in the history books, but he never fully enjoyed the affection of the Curva. The achievement only looks more impressive when you consider that Ciro Immobile scored only 12 goals, his lowest tally since joining the club in 2016 and only his second time finishing with fewer than 20. Maurizio Sarri leaned on others: Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Felipe Anderson and Mattia Zaccagni. The first of those may not return, having so far declined to extend a contract that expires in 2024.

I had the same affinity with the Sampdoria supporters, but could never really manage it at Juventus. Aside from his own writing, Tim has translated works by Moravia, Pavese, Calvino, Calasso, Machiavelli and Leopardi; his book, Translating Style, which analyses Italian translations of the English modernists, is considered a classic in its field.

While football has clearly changed in the intervening twenty years, many of the issues, themes and emotions that Parks explores remain reassuringly familiar to fans today.
