At issue was whether the Titan vessel would be independently assessed by industry regulators or risk assessors. Chris Boyer of the National Association for Search and Rescue said the search for Titan likely cost millions of dollars of public funds; however, the USCG declined to give an estimate, saying they "do not associate cost with saving a life". According to U.S. attorney Stephen Koerting, the USCG is generally prohibited by federal law from collecting reimbursement related to any search or rescue service. Formerly known as Cyclops 2, [12] Titan was a five-person submersible vessel operated by OceanGate Inc. The 6.7-metre-long (22ft), 10,432kg (23,000lb) vessel was constructed from carbon fibre and titanium. [13] The entire pressure vessel consisted of two titanium hemispheres with matching titanium interface rings bonded to the 142cm (56in) internal diameter, 2.4-metre-long (7.9ft) carbon fibre-wound cylinder. [14] One of the titanium hemispherical end caps could be detached to provide the hatch [5] and was fitted with a 380mm-diameter (15in) acrylic window. [15] In 2020, Rush said that the hull, originally designed to reach 4,000m (13,000ft) below sea level, [16] had been downgraded to a depth rating of 3,000m (9,800ft) after demonstrating signs of cyclic fatigue. In 2020 and 2021, the hull was repaired or rebuilt. [17] Rush told the Travel Weekly editor-in-chief that the carbon fibre had been sourced at a discount from Boeing because it was too old for use in the company's airplanes. [18] Boeing stated they have no records of any sale to Rush or to OceanGate. [19] OceanGate had initially not sought certification for Titan, arguing that excessive safety protocols hindered innovation. [4] Lloyd's Register, a ship classification society, declined OceanGate's request to class the vessel in 2019. [20] A modified Logitech F710 wireless game controller was used to steer Titan. Passages in a section of the Iliad called the Deception of Zeus suggest the possibility that Homer knew of a tradition in which Oceanus and Tethys (rather than Uranus and Gaia, as in Hesiod) were the parents of the Titans. [18] Twice Homer has Hera describe the pair as "Oceanus, from whom the gods are sprung, and mother Tethys", while in the same passage Hypnos describes Oceanus as "from whom they all are sprung". [19] In an interview with the Smithsonian magazine in 2019, Rush complained that the commercial sub industry had not “innovated or grown – because they have all these regulations”. The 2016 and 2018 models weren’t awful, but they have more problems (particularly with the exhaust system in 2016, the fuel system in 2018, and the transmission in both years) than other years around it with similar price points and features.Woodard, p. 92; Hard, pp. 34–35; Burkert 1995, p. 94; Caldwell, p. 36 on lines 133-137; West 1966, p. 200. The identified debris consisted of the tail cone (not part of the pressure vessel) and the forward and aft end bells– both part of the pressure vessel intended to protect the crew from the ocean environment. [112] According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the debris field was concentrated in two areas, with the aft end bell lying separate from the front end bell and the tail cone. [113] [106] Other Hittite texts contain allusions to "former gods" ( karuilies siunes), precisely what Hesiod called the Titans, theoi proteroi. Like the Titans, these Hittite karuilies siunes, were twelve (usually) in number and end up confined in the underworld by the storm-god Teshub, imprisoned by gates they cannot open. [107] In Hurrian, the Hittite's karuilies siunes were known as the "gods of down under" ( enna durenna) and the Hittites identified these gods with the Anunnaki, the Babylonian gods of the underworld, [108] whose defeat and imprisonment by the storm-god Marduk, in the Babylonian poem Enûma Eliš (late second millennium BC or earlier), [109] parallels the defeat and imprisonment of the Titans. [110] Other collectivities of gods, perhaps associated with the Mesopotamian Anunnaki, include the Dead Gods ( Dingiruggû), the Banished Gods ( ilāni darsūti), and the Defeated (or Bound) Gods ( ilāni kamûti). [111] Orphic literature [ edit ] The sparagmos [ edit ] Dionysus in a mosaic from the House of Poseidon, Zeugma Mosaic MuseumThe Roman mythographer Hyginus, in his somewhat confused genealogy, [24] after listing as offspring of Aether (Upper Sky) and Earth (Gaia), Ocean [Oceanus], Themis, Tartarus, and Pontus, next lists "the Titans", followed by two of Hesiod's Hundred-Handers: Briareus and Gyges, one of Hesiod's three Cyclopes: Steropes, then continues his list with Atlas, Hyperion and Polus, Saturn [Cronus], Ops [Rhea], Moneta, Dione, and the three Furies: Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. [25] The geographer Pausanias, mentions seeing the image of a man in armor, who was supposed to be the Titan Anytos, who was said to have raised the Arcadian Despoina. [26] Former gods [ edit ]
