The marula fruit grows in Africa's subequatorial plains and elephants are attracted by the scent of ripe marula fruit and gather beneath their trees. Made with real african Marula fruit that is grown wild, hand harvested, washed and sorted to ensure the best quality fruit spirit. The botanicals are steeped in the pot still for 24 hours prior to distillation to allow the flavours to infuse in the alcohol. The botanicals, however, are very traditional, with grains of paradise, orange peel, orange blossom alongside the juniper making this 43% South African gin a treat. I normally like to try my first taste of a gin, with an unflavoured light tonic water which enables me to taste the full flavour of the gin and this Amarula tasting was no exception.Made with a base of marula fruit spirit, along with a whole herd of botanicals, including grains of paradise and orange blossom, which are steeped in the spirit before being distilled, it’s superb splashed into quality tonic. Gin has become incredibly popular in recent years and being a big gin fan, I enjoy trying all the different varieties with their unique tastes. The pure flavour, with a hint of floral and citrus tones came through first, followed by a bit of a kick which was unexpected but quite pleasant. The Amarula Trust was originally set up to safeguard the African elephant – vital to the marula fruit harvest – and preserve the legacy of its local communities.

The fruit is hand picked and the locals then wash destone, pulp and cool the fruit before it is distilled into marula fruit spirit. This sophisticated and gentle spirit has been produced using a mix of botanicals, including mild juniper notes and subtle orange blossom. Amarula cream is a smooth experience of pure and precious blend of natures fresh cream and the mysterious taste of the wild amarula fruit.

The first thing that struck me about the African Gin from Amarula was the eye catching elephant on the front of the bottle, the turquoise and gold colours are stunning together and really make the bottle stand out. It took many years to perfect the combination of botanicals and marula fruit spirit that resulted in this premium, complex and utterly unique gin, which celebrates the exotic flavours of the indigenous marula fruit. Light and fresh gin from folks at Amarula, made with a base of marula fruit spirit alongside a blend of botanicals including wild Marula fruit, juniper berries, orange peel, orange blossoms and grains of paradise.
