About this deal

Not only is The Snowman and the Snowdog a charming nod to the original Snowman story, but it's also a lovely way of introducing loss and grief to children in an honest, straightforward way.

The Snowman™ and The Snowdog Story - The Snowman The Snowman™ and The Snowdog Story - The Snowman

Billy and his mum have moved into a new house, but Billy isn't very full of Christmas cheer, as his beloved old dog has passed away. Billy uses items from the box to build a snowman just like the one in the photo, and with leftover snow he forms a snowdog. Birmingham Repertory Company produces The Snowman for stage, incorporating the original musical score. Beautiful images from the film bring the magical Christmas story to life – you can view the gallery for some images from the book. A unique, honest and inspirational storyteller, Raymond leaves behind a treasure trove of work – including his beautiful and best-known picture book The Snowman – a timeless story of magic and wonder, beloved by generations of families. So when the snow falls and Billy starts to build a Snowman, he knows exactly what to do - he builds a Snowdog too! We had the soundtrack music from the TV special and she played that while reading to complete the experience. The pictures are more rounded and cutesy than Raymond Briggs' original illustrations but they're charming and cute. When Billy wishes his snowman and snowdog to life, they take him on a journey to the North Pole, where he competes in a sled race and even meets Santa Claus! So when the snow falls and Billy starts to build a Snowman, he knows exactly what to do- he builds a Snowdog too!

In this holiday picture book, a companion to Raymond Briggs’s The Snowman, a little boy builds a snow puppy next to his snowman—in hopes of getting a real puppy for Christmas. This activity book is full of fun things to do with plenty of pictures to colour, dot-to-dots and drawings to finish.

His graphic novel Ethel and Ernest, which portrayed his parents' 41-year marriage, won Best Illustrated Book in the 1999 British Book Awards. This is a perfect level one early reader book with very simple sentences and easy words young readers will be familiar with. But the best is yet to come on Christmas morning, when a real, live puppy is waiting under the tree. Raymond is honoured with a BookTrust Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to children's literature. This is more of a winter book than a Christmas book, but I categorized it as Christmas because that's usually when we read books about snow as well.

Briggs continued to work in a similar format, but with more adult content, in Gentleman Jim (1980), a sombre look at the working class trials of Jim and Hilda Bloggs, closely based on his parents.

This enchanting book reunites readers with the Snowman and introduces them to an adorable new puppy-friend, the Snowdog. Step 1 Readers feature big type and easy words for children who know the alphabet and are eager to begin reading. I get that it makes the ending that much more special, but it was hard for me to read those pages to my 2 year old.
