The beauty of our Irish peat briquettes is that they are a 100% natural product that has not had anything added to it to make it burn brighter or for longer. Not sure about Cornwall ( a bit outside the ken of our local TV ) but Dorset, Devon and South Somerset got a bit of a battering. Unlike wood that generally burns with a long orange flame our Irish peat briquettes burn with a short flame.

The Bord na Mona briquettes need to be kept under shelter as they will disintegrate if left exposed. it is nice to know from some peat experts how to manage our first experience with the peat briquettes (I probably would NOT have thought about a covered vessel until after the first attempt at removing the ash and the resulting mess and subsequent clean up)! We are fortunate to live in a mild region of England and have not needed to turn on the central heating for about 25years now, which not only has saved us a fortune on oil (no gas here) but has also reduced our carbon footprint considerably. My (plastic) greenhouse got blown across the garden along with my geraniums and watercress (that's another story! To me the smell from briquettes was stronger from touching them and not burning them whereas the smell of the turf really comes out when it is being burned.If you have never experienced the magical smell that is given off from this type of fuel then you have never lived!
